SEGUIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran men's soccer team fell to Mary Hardin-Baylor, 1-0, Sunday night at Gustafson Field.
An 88th-minute goal was the difference as the Bulldogs dropped their final home non-conference match of the season. UMHB outshot TLU 18-13 and held an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal.
The momentum lied with the Bulldogs early as they peppered the Crusader keeper with shots within the first ten minutes with
Evan Pacheco (San Antonio/Central Catholic),
Raymond Palmer (San Antonio/Clark), and
Elijah Lopez (North Richland Hills/Richland) all having shots on goal. In the second half, Pacheco had another opportunity to put the Bulldogs (2-5) ahead on a penalty kick in the 57th minute but it was saved by the Crusaders keeper. It would be the final shot on target for the Bulldogs on the night.
Nearly 30 minutes later, the Cru (4-2) scored the go-ahead goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Ernesto Avila (Houston/Humble) made ten saves, his second career double-digit save effort in his career.
With the loss, the all-time series between the programs is now 11-11-5 dating back to 1999.
Next up, TLU travels to San Antonio again to face UC Santa Cruz in a neutral site match hosted by Trinity at Paul McGinlay Field on Sunday, Sept. 27.
