SEGUIN, Texas -- #RV Texas Lutheran women's basketball defeated Schreiner 71-52 on Friday night at Memorial Gymnasium.
Redshirt senior
Hannah Gallegos (San Antonio/Harlan) led the Bulldogs (10-4, 5-0 SCAC) with a career-high 15 points in addition to two steals. Gallegos, who missed the previous two seasons due to injury, finished in double figures for the second time in her career and second in the last three games. Redshirt junior
Davi'Yanna Jones (San Antonio/Stevens) poured in 14 of her own along with a team-high eight rebounds, while
Sarahi Jones (Los Fresnos/Los Fresnos),
Noelani Ajel (Cibolo/Steele), and
Jessietheresa Brisky (Los Fresnos/Los Fresnos) all finished with at least seven points. Ten of the 11 active Bulldogs contributed to the scoring column to grind out the victory.
The contest got off to a slow start, with both teams struggling to establish any sort of rhythm or flow. Both teams were cold from the field but the Bulldogs leaned on
Davi'Yanna Jones's presence in the paint to lead the charge in the opening period with eight points to give the Bulldogs a 13-12 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Bulldogs defense clamped down on the Mountaineers throughout the second quarter as TLU used Mountaineer turnovers to generate offensive looks. The Bulldogs outscored the Mountaineers 24-8 with Gallegos taking on the offensive responsibility in the period scoring eight of her 15 points in the quarter. Thirteen of the Bulldogs points came off Schreiner's nine turnovers in the quarter.
Offense would be much easier to come by in the third quarter for both teams. Gallegos continued to lead the Bulldogs offense in the third with seven of TLU's 20 points. TLU stretched their lead to as many as 24 points in the quarter.
Noelani Ajel led the Bulldogs down the stretch with a team-high six points in the fourth quarter as they managed the game through the final period - coasting to their sixth straight double-digit victory.
Keys to the Bulldogs victory was a 32-18 advantage in points in the paint while also going a perfect 15-of-15 from the free throw line as a team, led by four makes from
Emerald St. Laurent (The Woodlands/Oak Ridge).
The Bulldogs continue SCAC play on Saturday, January 17 against McMurry at Memorial Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 6 PM. The game will be streamed on FloCollege. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
