BELTON, Texas -- After numerous lightning delays pushed the game to a 9 PM start, the Texas Lutheran men's soccer team fell to Mary Hardin-Baylor 2-1 Saturday night at Belton ISD. The Bulldogs move to 1-1 on the year while UMHB improves to 2-0.
It was a defensive battle in the first half as neither team was able to get on the board in the opening 45 minutes.
In the 74th minute, the Cru were able to break through and end the scoreless match to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore
Evan Pacheco (San Antonio/Central Catholic) would respond just six minutes later with the equalizer via an assist from freshman goalkeeper
Ernesto Avila (Houston/Humble) as the two teams entered the final 10 minute stretch tied one-all.
The UMHB response was almost immediate as an 81st minute goal proved to be the difference as the Cru overtook the Bulldogs in the game's waning moments.
In total, Mary Hardin-Baylor out shot the Bulldogs 11-3 with an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Ernesto Avila (Houston/Humble) made six saves in-goal for the Bulldogs.
Texas Lutheran returns to Gustafson Field on Friday, Sept. 5 as they welcome Marymount (VA) to Seguin. The match is set to kick off at 7:30 PM and will be streamed on FloCollege. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
