SEGUIN, Texas -- #RV Texas Lutheran Baseball split a doubleheader against Austin College, dropping the first game 8-5 before responding in game two with a 6-2 victory on Saturday at Katt-Isbel Field.
Texas Lutheran scored four runs in the ninth but came up just short, 8-5, in game one.
Chase Bourgeois (League City/Clear Falls) finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Brayden Sprencel (Robstown/Calallen) went 1-for-4 with two RBI while Tyler Helpenstill (Pearland/Lutheran South) went 2-for5 with an RBI.
Austin College took a 3-0 lead in the third before tacking on runs in the fifth and seventh to hold a 5-0 lead.
The Bulldogs got one run back in the eighth as Adam Peavy (Houston/Memorial) scored on an Austin College error.
Austin College scored three more runs in the ninth to take an 8-1 lead. The Bulldogs ninth inning rally would fall short, scoring four runs in the ninth courtesy of RBI singles from Bourgeois and Helpenstill and a two-RBI single from Sprencel.
The Bulldogs responded in game two, winning the series with a 6-2 win. The Bulldogs (17-7, 10-5) scored six runs on nine hits.
Triston McGowan (Vidor/Vidor) tossed his third complete game of the season with eight strikeouts, allowing just two runs on five hits to pick up his fourth win of the season.
Tyler Helpenstill went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored, while Kash Durkin (Liberty Hill/Liberty Hill) and Michael Barrera (San Antonio/East Central) both went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Texas Lutheran scored the first run of the game on an RBI single from Helpenstill but the 'Roos quickly responded with a run of their own in the top of the second.
TLU regained the lead in the fourth courtesy of a bunt RBI single from Barrera. Austin College would get the run back in the sixth to tie the game 2-2.
Four Austin College errors in the seventh inning allowed the Bulldogs to pull away as TLU scored three runs on just one hit in the inning. Back-to-back errors to start the inning put runners on before a one-out, RBI single from Durkin gave the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead. Drew Burnett (Seguin/Seguin) followed with a sacrifice fly before Durkin capped the inning by scoring on the third 'Roos error of the inning.
Mason Goudeau (Liberty/Liberty) hit a sacrifice fly to allow Barrera to bring the game to its final score of 6-2 in the eighth inning.
