SEGUIN, Texas -- Despite a career-high 27 points and seven rebounds from Teddy Tapken (Austin/Lake Travis), Texas Lutheran fell to Schreiner, 88-78, on Saturday.
Tapken scored a career-high 27 points on 11-of-15 shooting and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. Xavier Phillips (Austin/Dripping Springs) and Mason Wallace (San Antonio/Judson) joined Tapken in double-figures with 14 points each with Phillips adding four rebounds and four assists for Texas Lutheran (6-15, 4-8 SCAC). Easton Allen (New Braunfels/Marion) grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds in addition to seven points.
Prior to Saturday night's game, Texas Lutheran honored its three seniors: Easton Allen, Xavier Phillips, and Nell Horton (Detroit, MI/East English Village Prep) for their senior night.
The two teams traded small leads early but it would be Schreiner who would carry a five-point lead into the second media timeout. Just as the Mountaineers looked to pull away late in the first half, the Bulldogs went on a 12-2 run to shrink the Schreiner lead to two points. Isaac Orozco (Helotes/O'Connor) would be responsible for eight of the 12 points of the run via his own scoring or dishing out one of his five assists on the night. Schreiner carried a seven point lead into halftime thanks in part to a buzzer beater from Beau Cervantes to end the half.
Schreiner would lead for the entire duration of the second half, leading by as many as 14 points.
Up next, the Bulldogs return to action on Friday, Feb. 14, with a road game at rival Trinity in Calgaard Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 7:30 PM. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
