SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- No. 14 Texas Lutheran (9-0, 5-0 SCAC) was tested on Sunday at Trinity Softball Field and passed with flying colors, sweeping the Trinity Tigers, 6-4, 5-0.
Several Bulldogs stepped up on Sunday with exceptional performances. Senior Tavery Ortiz (Texas City/Texas) hit .573 over the two games including a 3-for-3 effort in Sunday's second game, junior Taylor Vannett (Kingwood/Kingwood) hit .500 with two RBIs and two runs scored, junior Harleigh Russell (Fort Worth/Boswell), who was last week's SCAC Hitter of the Week, hit .429 on Sunday with two RBIs.
It took extra innings, but TLU was able to outlast the Tigers 6-4 in eight innings. Texas Lutheran opened the scoring in the third inning as Taylor Vannett followed a leadoff single from Harleigh Russell with an RBI triple for the first run of the day. Linzee Leal (Corpus Christi/Mary Carroll) hit an RBI single up the middle to score Vannett to make the game 2-0. A one-out RBI single from Annie Kay (Sinton/Sinton) scored Leal and extended the TLU lead to 3-0. The final run of the day came on a Serena Gonzalez (Corpus Christi/Foy H. Moody) sacrifice fly.
The Tigers (5-4, 3-2 SCAC) punched back in the bottom half of the inning, plating four runs of their own on five hits and a TLU error.
Both offenses remained dormant with the two teams sprinkling stranded base runners over the next four innings. The Bulldogs scratched two runs across in the top of the eighth to regain the lead. Following a leadoff walk to Caelee Clark (Montgomery/Lake Creek). Clark would come around and score following a bunt from Missy Muras (La Grange/La Grange) and a Trinity error. An RBI single from Faith Hernandez (Dinuba, CA/Dinuba) added an extra insurance run for the Bulldogs, bringing the game to its final score.
Katelyn Howard (Waller/Hempstead) got the start and allowed three runs on seven hits over 2.2 innings. Ainsley Davis (Rockwall/Jesuit (OR)) relieved Howard, tossing 4.1 innings and only allowing two hits and a walk to earn the win. Amanda White (Lockhart/Lockhart) earned the save, her second of the season, allowing a lone baserunner in her one inning of work.
Texas Lutheran cruised past the Tigers in game two of the prolonged three-game SCAC series to clinch TLU's 67th consecutive conference series victory dating back to joining the conference in 2014.
The Bulldogs were powered by a two-RBI performance from Harleigh Russell.
In the circle, Amanda White twirled a gem, earning the win in 6.2 innings pitched and striking out a season-high five batters with three hits and five walks allowed. White gave way to freshman Kezia Alvear (Kyle/Hays) in the seventh who completed the shutout and earned her first career save by recording the final out with the bases loaded.
The two teams traded zeros on the scoreboard until a fourth inning RBI single by Harleigh Russell that scored two runs.
TLU pulled away in the sixth with three runs on four hits. Following a leadoff walk and a single, Russell struck again with an RBI single to score Riley Futrell (Florence/Florence). After stealing second base, Russell scored on an RBI double from Taylor Vannett that also scored Ryan Treviño (Buda/Crockett) who made her collegiate debut on Sunday. The final run of the game came as Vannett scored on a two-out RBI single from Caelee Clark.
Russell paced TLU with a 2-for-4, two RBI showing while Tavery Ortiz went 3-for-3.
The teams will close the series in full on March 25.
The Bulldogs return to Ed Kruse Stadium on Sunday, March 2, as they welcome Carnegie Mellon to Seguin for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 4 PM with the game being broadcast on TLU+. All streaming and live stats links can be found on tlubulldogs.com.
