COUSHATTA, LA -- #RV Texas Lutheran Baseball completed the weekend sweep of Centenary College with a dominant 12-2 win on Sunday at Red River High School in Coushatta, Louisiana.
Prior to that game, the two teams started in the eighth inning of Friday's suspended game that ended in the top of the eighth with TLU leading 3-1. The Bulldogs would set the tone for today's action immediately by scoring four runs in the eighth. Two walks would load the bases for freshman Cooper Jen (Kyle/Hays) who would hit a bases clearing double to stretch the lead to 6-1. Mason Goudeau (Liberty/Liberty) pushed across the final run of the inning with an RBI single to score Jen. A Kash Durkin (Liberty Hill/Liberty Hill) two-run home run in the top of the ninth brought the game to its final score. Durkin finished 2-for-4 with a double, a homer, and two-RBI, while Cooper Jen finished 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Adam Peavy (Houston/Memorial) drove in two runs on Friday prior to the game being suspended.
Isaiah Ramirez (San Antonio/Marshall) relieved Friday's starter Nolan McInvale (Poth/Poth) and threw two shutout innings in relief in his collegiate debut. McInvale earned the win, allowing one run on three hits through seven innings while striking out five.
The Bulldogs (3-0, 3-0 SCAC), who scored 12 runs on 16 hits in the game, held just a 3-2 lead before exploding for a five-run seventh inning to put the game away and complete the sweep.
Kash Durkin went 3-for-5 with a double, a homer, and three RBI, while Drew Burnett (Seguin/Seguin) went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Ryan Botello (Edinburg/Robert Vela) finished 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and a walk. Chase Bourgeois (League City/Clear Falls) scored four times, going 2-for-6 with an RBI at the plate.
Triston McGowan (Vidor/Vidor) pitched a complete game in just his second career start, allowing two unearned runs on four hits. After entering Sunday with just six career strikeouts, McGowan struck out a career-high 11 batters to pick up his first win of the season.
Centenary would scratch two unearned runs across in the bottom of the third to grab a short-lived 2-0 lead.
The Bulldogs immediately responded to tie the game at two in the top of the fourth as a lead off single from Bourgeois set the table for a two-run homer by Kash Durkin. A Brayden Sprencel (Robstown/Calallen) RBI single in the sixth gave TLU its first lead of the game.
Texas Lutheran blew the game open with a five-run seventh inning that saw the Bulldogs make a trip through the entire lineup to take a 8-2 lead. Two singles set up a one-out RBI double for Kash Durkin to get the scoring started. Drew Burnett followed up with a two-RBI single. Brayden Sprencel doubled to right center before Ryan Botello capped the inning with a two-RBI single to score Burnett and Botello.
TLU continued to pour it on with an RBI single by Caleb Small (Round Rock/Gateway College Prepatory) in the eighth and RBI singles from Cooper Jen and Chase Bourgeois in the ninth, in addition to Bourgeois scoring on Centenary's third and final error of the day.
Texas Lutheran will turn its attention to non-conference play this week as they face Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday, Feb. 18. As of now, the game is scheduled to take place at Red Murff Field in Belton, but due to potential weather in the area, there is a chance the games are moved to Katt-Isbel Field in Seguin. First pitch is tentatively scheduled for 3 PM and will be streamed on TLU+ if the game is moved to Texas Lutheran. All streaming and live stats links can be found on tlubulldogs.com.
