TLU Men's Soccer Reaches NCAA Tournament Second Round For First Time in Program History

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran men's soccer team (13-4-3) earned its first NCAA Tournament win in program history with a 3-2 win over the Whitman College Blues (14-1-6) in San Antonio on Saturday night in the 2025 NCAA Tournament First Round. With the win, Texas Lutheran has knocked off back-to-back undefeated teams.

San Antonio native, freshman Jesus Carrillo (San Antonio/Reagan), netted his first career brace and Carson Alldredge (Spring/Klein) netted the Bulldogs other goal, his second of the season and postseason. Freshman Max Guzman (San Marcos/San Marcos) dished out two assists Saturday night while Raymond Palmer (San Antonio/Clark) and Romario Salazar (San Antonio/Travis Early College) added one each.

Ernesto Avila (Houston/Humble) recorded a pair of saves to pick up his 13th win of the season.

The two sides started slow offensively with just two shots in the first 15 minutes of play. In the 31st minute, a free kick from Max Guzman found Carson Alldredge for a header to make it 1-0 Texas Lutheran. For the second straight game, TLU limited their opponents to no shots in the first half.

In the 48th minute, Raymond Palmer played a cross from Romario Salazar off his chest that happened to find Jesus Carrillo who drilled it past the Whitman keeper to double the TLU lead at 2-0.

In the 78th minute, Max Guzman found Carrillo for his eighth goal of the season and his first career brace to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead.

The Blues made it interesting in the final 12 minutes as they scored in quick succession in the 79th and 82nd minutes to cut the TLU lead to 3-2. The Blues stayed on the attack in the final minutes but were not able to equalize with their final three shots going off-target as the Bulldogs held on for the win.

Texas Lutheran will face regional host and their local rivals, the fifth-ranked Trinity Tigers Sunday night at Paul McGinlay Field in San Antonio with a trip to the Sweet Sixteen on the line. This will mark the second meeting between the two programs in the NCAA Tournament, with the Tigers earning a 3-0 win in the first round of the 2002 tournament. The match is scheduled to kickoff at 8 PM on ncaa.com. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
