SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran men's soccer team's (13-5-3) season came to an end in the second round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament on Sunday at Paul McGinlay Field in San Antonio as the Bulldogs fell 2-0 to rival, fifth-ranked Trinity (17-1-1).
The Tigers came out aggressive with ten shots in the first half, taking a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute on a penalty kick. Trinity doubled their lead in the 65th minute to bring the match to its final score.
Texas Lutheran was limited to six shots on the night but none were on target. In total, the Tigers outshot the Bulldogs, 14-6.
The Bulldogs - a team picked to finish fourth in the preseason poll - conclude the 2025 season with a 13-5-3 record, going 8-1-2 in the SCAC to finish as the SCAC runner-up in the regular season before winning the SCAC Tournament for the second time in program history. The 2025 team was also the first team in program history to win a game in the NCAA Tournament. Texas Lutheran finishes its season ranked in the top 25 nationally in save percentage (.828). The ten shutouts from
Ernesto Avila (Houston/Humble) and the TLU defense tie for the most in program history as a team and are a new individual record for Avila. The Bulldogs will graduate 11 seniors. We thank them for all of their contributions to the Texas Lutheran men's soccer program.
