Bulldogs Power Past Centenary (LA), 55-27

SHREVEPORT, LA -- Led by 139 yards from scrimmage from Weston Guzman (McAllen/McAllen), including the fourth 100-yard rushing game of his career, Texas Lutheran (2-3, 1-0 SCAC) ran for 329 yards and tallied over 500 yards of total offense in its 55-27 win over Centenary College on Saturday night at Atkins Field in Shreveport, Louisiana.

With the win, Texas Lutheran improves to 6-0 in SCAC openers in the program's history in the conference.

Texas Lutheran showed no hangover from the bye week scoring on their first three possessions to race out to a 17-0 lead. Texas Lutheran scored touchdowns on five of its nine possessions in the second half and cruised to a 28-point win to open conference play.

TLU rolled up 513 yards on 87 snaps, averaging 5.9 yards per play, including five yards per play on the ground on 66 attempts.

Leading the way was Guzman, who finished with 125 yards and four touchdowns on 29 carries (4.3 avg) and one catch for 14 yards. The four rushing touchdowns are the most since teammate Caden Bosanko (San Antonio/East Central) accomplished it twice last season, including once against Centenary, and the most by a running back since Marquis Barrolle against Louisiana College in 2014. Tory Brooks (Hillsboro/Hillsboro) ran for 59 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries (6.6 avg) while Javin Logan (Houston/North Shore) rushed for 59 yards on 12 carries (4.9 avg) in the second half.

In all, the Bulldogs gained 10 or more yards on 19 of their 87 snaps on Saturday night.

Quarterback Reece Deitrick (Austin/Canyon) completed 13-of-20 passes for 184 yards and a 28-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Camarillo (Gonzales/Southside) while also running for a career-high 37 yards.

Defensively, Texas Lutheran limited Centenary to six points in the first half before the Gents made it interesting with a 21-point third quarter. The Bulldogs swarmed the Gents Saturday night forcing two fumbles, an interception, three sacks, three pass break ups, three quarterback hurries, and 11 tackles for loss. Owen Garcia (Austin/Connally) led the Bulldogs with a career-high 12 tackles, including 3.5 for loss. Marvin Farris (Rosenberg/Lamar Consolidated) finished with eight tackles, including 1.5 for loss. Marec Square (Houston/Lamar) corralled his third interception of the season and added three tackles.

The Bulldogs return to Seguin to continue SCAC play next Saturday, Oct. 18, when they host Hendrix College at 1 PM. Saturday will be packed with festivities as it will act as the annual Breast Cancer Awareness and Military Appreciation games as well as Senior Day with the Bulldogs honoring a 20-member senior class. The game will be broadcast on FloCollege along with KWED 1580 AM with Chris Austin on the call. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
