Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

#RV Women's Basketball Edges Austin College, 63-57

SHERMAN, Texas -- Sarahi Jones (Los Fresnos/Los Fresnos) and Lauren Sansano (San Antonio/FEAST) combined for 28 points and 17 rebounds as the #RV Texas Lutheran women's basketball team picked up their ninth straight victory with a 63-57 win over Austin College on Saturday.

Jones led the Bulldogs with 18 points on 40 percent shooting while recording nine rebounds. This is Jones's fifth time in her last six games grabbing nine or more boards. Lauren Sansano tallied her 11th double-digit game of the season on Saturday with 10 points and a season-high eight rebounds in addition to two assists and two steals.

Kailee Mulkey (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) and Angelina Sotelo (San Marcos/San Marcos) each finished with nine points and six rebounds. Mulkey finished with five steals, marking her fifth game this season with at least five steals. Callista Perez (San Antonio/Stevens) led the Bulldogs bench with six points and three assists, matching Elexis Morado (Kingsville/Santa Gertrudis Academy) for the team-high in addition to her five points.

With the win, Texas Lutheran extended their SCAC regular season winning streak to 15 games dating back to last season, the longest conference winning streak in program history. The 8-0 start is the best start to SCAC play for Texas Lutheran since joining the conference in 2013-14. Also with the win, head coach Troy Patterson moves into the third all-time in program wins with 64 career wins, surpassing Kim Callicoatte (1994-2000; 63-97) improving his record to 64-29 (.688) over his three-plus year tenure.

The Bulldogs struggled early and often offensively on Saturday but their patented defense was able to swing the game throughout as the Bulldogs forced 16 turnovers on Saturday. The Bulldogs would shoot just 25 percent as a team in the opening quarter but they were able to escape the slow start relatively unscathed as the period ended in a 12-12 tie.

The two teams would continue to trade leads through the second quarter with TLU closing the first half leading 28-26.

Texas Lutheran opened the second half with back-to-back three pointers to start what would be their best shooting period of the evening, shooting 46.7 percent in the third. Jones would score six of her 18 points in the period as the Bulldogs outscored the 'Roos 19-12 in the third to carry a nine point lead into the final quarter. The 'Roos would shrink the TLU lead as low as four points with 1:30 remaining, but the Bulldogs would seal the victory with a Sarahi Jones layup with a minute remaining followed by a sequence of free throws to close the game.

Up next, TLU returns to Memorial Gymnasium to begin their final four-game home stand of the season on Friday, January 31, as they welcome the #RV McMurry War Hawks to Seguin. Tip-off is set for 5:30 PM with a fan theme of a Black Out. The game will be streamed on TLU+. All streaming and live stats links will be available on tlubulldogs.com.
