Bulldogs Fall to Schreiner, 86-69; Eliminated from SCAC Tournament Contention

KERRVILLE, Texas -- Xavier Phillips (Austin/Dripping Springs) scored a team-high 17 points and dished out a team-high three assists it was not enough as Texas Lutheran suffered an 86-69 defeat to Schreiner Saturday night in a win or go home matchup with SCAC Tournament qualification on the line.

Texas Lutheran struggled on the boards trailing 41-26 in the battle on the glass.

After trailing early, the two teams would play a tightly contested first half with the Mountaineers taking a 36-35 lead into the break.

Hot shooting from the Mountaineers in the second half would doom the Bulldogs. The Mountaineers shot 57.7% in the second half, including 25-of-30 from the free throw line to keep the Bulldogs at bay and limit a complete Bulldogs comeback. TLU would lead 60-50 with 12:23 remaining and would be outscored 36-9 over the final 12-plus minutes of the game.

The Bulldogs  - a team picked to finish sixth in the preseason poll - conclude the 2022-23 season with a 10-15 record, going 5-11 in the SCAC to claim seventh place in the conference in the regular season. The Bulldogs will graduate three seniors - Keiman Capers (Houston/North Shore), Mason Green (San Marcos/San Marcos), and JT Watson (Fredericksburg/Fredericksburg). We thank them for all of their contributions to the Texas Lutheran men's basketball program.
