ABILENE, Texas -- A 13-4 run over the final 4:12 to end the contest gave the McMurry War Hawks the 64-55 victory over the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs Saturday afternoon at Kimbrell Arena.
Senior forward Taylor Skurka (New Braunfels/Steele) had a team-high 12 points, a new career-high. Kailee Mulkey (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) recorded eight rebounds to go along with eight points and two steals. Lauren Sansano (San Antonio/FEAST) and Elexis Morado (Kingsville/Santa Gertrudis Academy) each contributed nine points, five rebounds, and two steals. The Bulldogs struggled from the field shooting 30.4% from the field and 9.1% from deep on the afternoon. The Bulldogs turnover woes continued turning the ball over 23 times.
A last second jumper from Kailee Mulkey tied the game 14-all through one quarter in a quarter that saw senior Taylor Skurka lead the Bulldogs with six points. Elexis Morado would step up in the second quarter - scoring eight of her nine points in the quarter, equating to half of the Bulldogs total for the quarter - as TLU took a four-point lead into halftime. The two teams would enter the fourth quarter tied at 43. In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs shooting struggles would come to haunt them - shooting 13.3% in the fourth. While McMurry struggled in the fourth, the combination of going 13-of-15 from the free throw line and outscoring the Bulldogs 5-0 in second chance opportunities would give McMurry the win.
Texas Lutheran's season opening road trip continues as the Bulldogs travel to Corpus Christi on Wednesday to face a Division-I Texas A&M-Corpus Christi team picked to win the Southland Conference this season in an exhibition. Tip-off is set for 7 PM. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with all streaming and live stats links available on tlubulldogs.com.
