Southwestern Holds Off Second-Half Push by Bulldogs

SEGUIN, TX --Texas Lutheran fought back from a seven-point second-half deficit, but Southwestern held on to earn a 70-63 win over the Bulldogs at Memorial Gymnasium on Friday.

The Bulldogs (5-10, 3-4 SCAC) led by as many as 12 points in the first half and trailed by as many as seven in the second half, but rallied to get within 64-63 with 1:49 remaining. Southwestern (6-11, 3-5 SCAC) put the game away by holding the Bulldogs scoreless for the remaining time.

Senior Sebastian Andrade (El Paso/Americas) finished with 20 points, six rebounds, two assists, and three steals in the loss, while freshman Riley Fornerette (Surprize, Ariz./Dysart) was the lone man to join Andrade in double-figures - adding 12 points. Mason Green (San Marcos/San Marcos) corralled a career-high seven rebounds on the night.

Texas Lutheran was a perfect 3-of-3 from the field to open the first half and eventually pushed their lead to 16-8 with 13:15 left in the half. Southwestern would battle within five points over the course of the half, but Texas Lutheran would carry a 38-31 lead into the locker room with Andrade and Fornerette combining for half of the team's first half points.

The two teams would trade baskets to start the second half, but Southwestern would use an 11-4 run to take a 54-47 lead with 9:16 left. The Bulldogs would respond with a 11-6 run of their own to shrink their deficit to 60-58 with 3:57 remaining - with Andrade being responsible for six of those points. Texas Lutheran stayed within striking distance down the stretch but would never get closer than 64-63 with 1:49 remaining.
