Texas Lutheran Downs Southwestern on the Road, 60-43

GEORGETOWN, TX -- The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs defeated the Southwestern Pirates, 60-43 on Tuesday night at the Robertson Center on the campus of Southwestern University.

Senior Jayla Santa Maria (Edinburg/Edinburg) led all scorers with 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Fellow senior Morgan Rodriguez (New Braunfels/Canyon) had 11 points and five rebounds off the bench while senior guard Jenesis Navarro (San Antonio/Lee) stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, three rebounds, six assists, and five steals. Freshman Juliana Tapia (San Antonio/O'Connor) continued her impressive defensive season tallying five steals on the night.

Texas Lutheran improves its record to 7-5 (4-0 SCAC) while Southwestern drops to 8-7 (4-3 SCAC) - snapping a four game win streak.

The Texas Lutheran offense started off ice cold, falling behind 17-9 in the first quarter, before deploying a balanced offensive attack that saw three players score four points to climb back and take a 19-17 lead to close the first quarter. Defensively, the Bulldogs kept the Pirates from scoring for the final 2:43 of the first quarter.

Both teams struggled in the second quarter, the Bulldogs forced nine Southwestern turnovers in the quarter but the Bulldogs were unable to capitalize - shooting 19% from the field in the quarter.

Texas Lutheran ended the half ahead, 29-28.

The Bulldogs regained their rhythm in the third quarter. Jenesis Navarro led all players with seven points in the quarter - giving Texas Lutheran much needed momentum heading into the fourth quarter on the road. The Bulldogs stayed on top - leading 46-24 after three quarters.

The Bulldogs continued to play stifling defense in the fourth quarter forcing six turnovers - led by three steals from Navarro - as the Bulldogs pulled away to defeat the Pirates 60-43.
