KERRVILLE, TX -- The Bulldogs fought hard in their first action of 2022 - and first in 21 days - as they took on the Mountaineers of Schreiner University in Kerrville Tuesday night as the Mountaineers prevailed 64-60 on their home court.
After losing their early double digit lead, the Bulldogs were able to battle back from a 7-point deficit to tie the game at 60 with 1:20 remaining but they were unable to push past the Mountaineers to extend their SCAC winning streak to three games.
The Bulldogs (4-7, 2-1 SCAC) led 37-31 at halftime before the Mountaineers (7-9, 5-2 SCAC) fought back to take a 56-49 lead - holding the Bulldogs at 49 points for a six minute stretch in the second half. TLU tied the game at 60-60 on a layup from senior Jamir Mason (Pearland/St. Thomas Episcopal) but could never regain the lead with the Mountaineers scoring the decisive basket with five seconds remaining.
Mason led the Bulldogs with 17 points, nine rebounds, four steals, and two assists, while Xavier Phillips (Dripping Springs/Dripping Springs) added 14 points, five rebounds, and four steals. Mason Green (San Marcos/San Marcos) grabbed a career-high six rebounds. Cameron Fontenot (Katy/Second Baptist School) made his second start of the season and finished with six points and three rebounds.
The Bulldogs finished the game shooting 22-of-67 (32.8%) from the field and were only 8-of-30 (26.7%) on three-pointers. Schreiner struggled from the perimeter as well, shooting a measly 1-of-14 (7.1%) from deep, but were able to dominate the paint - holding a 50-24 advantage in points in the paint for the game.
