SHREVEPORT, La. -- The 13th-ranked Texas Lutheran Bulldogs are headed to the SCAC Softball Championship round for a sixth consecutive year after a 10-2 run-rule win over No. 22 Southwestern Friday at Centenary College.
Madisyn Cates (Baytown/Sterling) singled down the left-field line to bring home
Kelly Jurden (Brenham/Brenham) with the game-ending run in the fifth. Cates went 3-for-4, drove in four, and scored twice.
TLU moved its overall record to 29-7. Southwestern dropped to 34-5.
The Bulldogs play in the SCAC tournament championship round on Sunday. The first game is set for a 1 p.m. start. If TLU loses the first game Sunday, the second championship game would start 30 minutes after the first.
Southwestern plays an elimination game at 8 p.m. tonight against either Centenary or University of Dallas.
TLU defeated Southwestern for the fourth time in five tries in 2019. The Pirates gave TLU its only loss of the conference regular-season.
At the top of TLU's order, Jurden and
Casey Martin (Pearland/Pearland) combined to score five runs and steal three bases. Jurden raised her school and conference-record steals record to 47.
Skylar Ouellette (Corpus Christi/Gregory-Portland) had two hits and drove in a pair.
Freshman right-hander
Chassety Raines (Spring/Klein Collins) improved to 8-0 overall with five innings of work. She allowed four hits and one earned run. Raines also went 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.
