SAN ANTONIO -- The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs swept a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader from top-ranked Trinity on Saturday with 12-4 and 9-6 wins.
The eighth-ranked Bulldogs (15-6, 2-1) bounced back from Friday night's 8-3 loss to Trinity and took two from the Tigers on their home field. Trinity dropped to 17-5 overall and to 4-2 in the SCAC.
In the late game, lefty reliever
Cameron Jones (San Antonio/Brennan) struck out the final Tiger batter with the tying run at the plate in the 10th inning of the 9-6 victory.
Jones, put into a varsity jersey only this week, pitched for the first time in a varsity contest since Feb. 18, 2017. Jones had two career innings to his name before his appearance against Trinity.
Jones (1-0) pitched the final 1-2/3 innings against the Tigers and struck out two. He allowed one hit. Jones entered the game in the ninth after Trinity tied the game on a two-run home run from Jake Martin. Jones struck out a batter in the ninth with the potential winning run at second.
After Martin's home run in the ninth, TLU came right back to score three in the top of the 10th. The Bulldogs scored the three runs on a bases-loaded wild pitch, an RBI single from
Cole Irby (Buda/Hays), and a Trinity fielding error.
Cullen Motsinger (Houston/Cypress Ranch) went 4-for-5 in the late game with a run scored and two RBI.
Motsinger also went 4-for-5 in the early 12-4 win. He had three runs scored.
Chad Curtis walked twice and drove in a pair of runs in the late game, and
Thomas Varner (Austin/Bowie) scored three runs.
Freshman reliever
Matthew Hickey (Houston/Klein Collins) gave the Bulldogs 3-2/3 innings of two-hit relief in the middle innings of Saturday's second game.
In the early game,
Dylan Murrell (Tomball/Memorial) improved to 4-1 with 7-2/3 innings. He struck out three, worked around 10 hits, and allowed three earned runs.
Austin Colon (La Grange/La Grange) recorded three hits and drove in three.
Tyler Cauley (Mont Belvieu/Barbers Hill) had two RBI and two hits, and
Cameron Wilson (Katy/Morton Ranch) registered two RBI. Cauley and Wilson each had doubles.
TLU returns to action this Tuesday with a home game against the University of Chicago. Game time at Katt-Isbel Field is set for 7 p.m.
