SEGUIN, Texas -- Third-ranked Texas Lutheran remained unbeaten in 2019 by completing a three-game series sweep of Hardin-Simmons with 7-4 and 7-1 wins Saturday.
TLU improved to 6-0 with the victories. HSU fell to 1-5 with the non-conference losses. The Bulldogs won the series-opener 8-3 on Friday night.
At TLU's Katt-Isbel Field, TLU won the early game Saturday behind two RBI from
Nick Gardoni (Salinas, Calif./Palma) and home runs from
Tyler Cauley (Mont Belvieu/Barbers Hill) and
Dalton Kinder (Cedar Park/Vista Ridge).
Kinder had three hits and scored three runs.
Blade Strzelczyk (San Antonio/East Central) added a pair of hits and two runs scored.
Nathan Malinovsky (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) tossed four innings of the seven-inning game to pick up his first win of the year. Malinovsky, a two-time All-American, allowed two earned runs, walked four and struck out three.
Drew Waller (Bellville/Bellville) tossed the last three innings to post the save. Waller did not allow an earned run and struck out three.
In game two,
Austin Colon (La Grange/La Grange) doubled twice, tripled, reached base four times, and drove in a pair of runs.
Cauley added another two RBI and had two hits, and
Chad Curtis (Wolfforth/Frenship) tripled and had two RBI.
Matthew Hickey (Houston/Klein Collins) picked up the win in relief. He struck out four and surrendered just one hit in 2-1/3 innings.
Riley Backs (Cypress/Cypress Falls) started and went three innings. He allowed just one hit, struck out four and walked three.
Joe Burch (Geronimo/Navarro) tossed the final two innings and struck out two.
TLU returns to action next Friday and Saturday at Katt-Isbel for a three-game series with the University of Texas at Dallas.
