SEGUIN, Texas -- Second-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor turned a 3-0 end-of-first quarter lead into a 30-0 halftime advantage after a 27-point second quarter that jump-started a 47-14 road win over Texas Lutheran.
Saturday at TLU's Bulldog Stadium, Jonel Reed scored on pass receptions of eight and 77 yards from Jase Hammack to give the Crusaders a 16-0 lead early in the second.
Still in the second quarter, Hammack hit T.J. Josey for TD connections of six and 19 yards at the 5:04 and 1:03 marks, respectively, before the half.
Hammack completed 26 of 41 passes for 378 yards and five touchdowns, and K.J. Miller (118 yards) and Reed (176 yards) each went over the century mark in receiving.
Reed caught six passes for 176 yards and two scores. Josey caught five for 48 yards and the two touchdowns.
UMHB, the 2016 NCAA DIII national champion and the 2017 national runner-up, improved to 3-0 overall and to 2-0 in the American Southwest Conference.
TLU dropped to 2-1 overall and to 1-1 in the ASC.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the third quarter on an
Austin Mathews seven-yard run. The run came after TLU forced a fumble and recovered it at the UMHB 14.
TLU scored in the fourth quarter on a nine-yard pass from
Kyle Grona to
Pearce Loth.
Grona made his first appearance on the field since leaving the season-opener against Hendrix, on Sept. 8, after the third play from scrimmage. The senior from Fredericksburg completed 22-for-40 for 193 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He rushed six times for 31 yards.
Loth caught six passes for 77 yards, and Mathews rushed 20 times for 36 yards.
TLU averaged just 2.3 yards per carry, rushing 36 times for 84 net yards.
The Bulldogs held UMHB to 131 rushing yards on 29 carries and to 5-for-14 on third down.
DaKwa Davis led TLU with 10 tackles.
Emory Cuzze added nine, and
James Bell chipped in eight tackles and had an interception and two pass breakups.
Manny Longoria registered a sack and two tackles for loss, and
Nwankwo Nwankwo collected six tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble.
Raylon Hickey paced the Cru with 14 total tackles. Eric Wright had a sack for 10 yards and two tackles for loss (for 16 total yards). Jalen Martin added 12 tackles.
TLU returns to Bulldog Stadium next Saturday for a 6 p.m. Homecoming contest against McMurry University.
