Texas Lutheran runs SCAC win streak to 44 games

SEGUIN, Texas -- Second-ranked Texas Lutheran Softball ran its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference regular-season win streak to 44 games with 5-2 and 5-1 wins over Southwestern that clinched the Bulldogs' fifth consecutive SCAC regular-season championship.

Friday at TLU's Ed Kruse Stadium - Morck Softball Field, TLU took the two conference victories and improved to 29-1 overall and to 14-0 in the SCAC.

The Bulldogs currently have the second-longest regular-season win streak in SCAC history. The conference record is 49, set by TLU with wins spanning over the 2014, 2015 and 2016 seasons.

TLU has not lost a conference regular-season game since April 2, 2016, when the Bulldogs fell 7-5 in the second game of a conference road doubleheader against Southwestern.

The Bulldogs pay a visit to Southwestern on Saturday for a road doubleheader in Georgetown, Texas. That doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.

TLU is 103-2 in the SCAC since joining the league for 2014 softball season. The Bulldogs are in search of their fifth straight SCAC Championship.

With the two wins on Friday, TLU assured itself of the 2018 No. 1 seed for the upcoming SCAC Championship tournament. The winner of the conference tournament is considered the conference champion.

The SCAC winner of the conference tournament title also secures the automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Championship. The Bulldogs have played in the NCAA Division III tournament in the last four seasons.

Southwestern dropped to 17-12 overall and to 6-8 in the SCAC with the two losses Friday.

Jordaine Bishop (Leander/Rouse) tossed a complete-game, five-hitter in the early contest and improved to 8-0. Bishop allowed just two runs and both were unearned.

Kyla Lockley (Wharton/Boling), Kassie Maddox (Midland/Greenwood), DeAnna Hernandez (Sugar Land/Dulles), and McKay Bloxham (Katy/Katy) each had RBI in the first game. Bloxham went 2-for-3.

In game two, Maddox appeared in relief and worked four scoreless innings. She allowed just three hits and walked only one. Maddox improved to 3-1.

Madisyn Cates belted a two-run double in the Bulldogs' four-run third. Haley Padilla (Spring Branch/Smithson Valley) and Cassie Roche (Corpus Christi/Gregory-Portland) also delivered RBI.
