SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran completed a doubleheader sweep of University of Chicago with 8-3 and 8-5 wins Saturday at TLU's Katt-Isbel Field. TLU finished off a 3-0 weekend that included a 2-0 shutout over the Maroons on Friday evening.ÂÂ
The Bulldogs won their fifth straight game and improved to 20-4 overall. Chicago dropped to 7-6 overall.ÂÂ
In the early game Saturday, TLU senior right-hander
Nathan Malinovsky (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) took a no-hitter into the fifth inning. Malinovsky (5-1) settled for 6 innings of work with three strikeouts, two walks and three hits.
Landon Weatherly (Granbury/Granbury) retired the final batter with runners at first and second. He picked up his second save for the season.
Thomas (Austin/Bowie) stole two bases, scored a run and collected two hits.
Tyler Cauley (Baytown/Barbers Hill) doubled, had a solo home run and knocked in a pair of runs.
Spencer Brandt (Yoakum/Yoakum) drove in three, and
Chad Curtis (Wolfforth/Midland JC) added two more RBI for the Bulldogs.
Jacob Peterson took the loss for the Maroons in the early game. He went 3 innings and allowed four earned runs. He scattered eight hits and struck out one.
In the late game,
Riley Schaefer (Thorndale/Thorndale) went 3-for-3 with a solo home run, his fifth on the season. He plated two runs for the Bulldogs. Cauley collected his sixth home run of the year with a two-RBI homer in the sixth. Cauley finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base in game two.ÂÂ
Eric Rabinowitz (Schertz/Clemens),
Ben Marvin (Kingwood/Kingwood), and
Matthew Lemon (Caldwell/Caldwell) each collected a hit and drove in runs, respectively.ÂÂ
Cameron Wilson (Katy/Morton Ranch) added a hit and scored two for TLU.ÂÂ
Clint Johns (Olrand, Calif./Shasta JC) turned his fifth appearance of the season into a win. Johns pitched a scoreless 2-1/3 innings and moved to 3-0.
Dylan Murrell (Tomball/Memorial) pitched 1-2/3 innings of effective relief and collected his first save.ÂÂ
TLU used seven pitchers. Chicago starter Joe Liberman (3-4) went two innings in front of five relievers, and took the loss.ÂÂ
The Bulldogs resume Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play Thursday evening in San Antonio, Texas against Trinity University. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Trinity Baseball Field.ÂÂ
