Bulldogs put away Dallas 91-76 to keep SCAC title hopes alive

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Texas Lutheran's push for a fourth consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Championship is still alive after Friday's 91-76 win over the University of Dallas in the SCAC tournament quarterfinal.

At Colorado College's Reid Arena, TLU hit six three-pointers in a late second-half run that broke open a tie game and propelled the Bulldogs to a conference semifinal matchup Saturday with Centenary College (La.).

The Bulldogs and Gents will face-off at 3 p.m. central (2 p.m. mountain) Saturday in Reid Arena. Links to the live webcast and live stats can be found at www.tlubulldogs.com.

TLU has now won eight straight Men's Basketball Championship games, dating back to TLU's first SCAC Championship run in 2015.

The Bulldogs have won four games overall late in this 2017-18 season. TLU improved to 12-14 overall.

The Crusaders' season is over with the quarterfinal loss. Dallas ends its year at 15-11. TLU was the sixth seed of this SCAC tournament. Dallas was the No. 3 seed.

With Friday's game tied at 55 with 8:09 to play, TLU's Matt Perry (Kerrville/Tivy) started the three-point barrage and hit a total of two in the shooting surge. Sebastian Andrade (El Paso/Americas) hit two threes in the spurt, and Alex Cage (Austin/McNeil) and Jacob Kouremetis (San Antonio/O'Connor) also connected from long range.

By the time of Kouremetis's three, with 1:40 to play, the Bulldogs were on a 23-11 run that stretched the lead to 78-66.

Kouremetis, the junior shooting guard, led TLU with 18 points. He added four rebounds and four assists. Kouremetis made four of his 10 three-point attempts. In his last two games, he has made 13 three-pointers.

The Bulldogs had five players in double figures against Dallas. Cage came off the bench to score 17. He hit three three-pointers and dished out three assists.

Andrade, a true freshman, also made three from beyond the arc and finished with 16 points. Perry and Jackson Willoughby (Port Aransas/Port Aransas) chipped in 13 and 10, respectively. Perry made three three-pointers.

The Bulldogs hit 14 total three-pointers and shot 14-for-30 (46.7 percent) from the arc.

TLU also thrived at the free throw line, making 23 out of 25 at the line.

Senior forward Matthew Gillette, after missing last week's overtime road win at Southwestern due to illness, returned to the court and gave the team nine points and seven rebounds. Nathan Josephs (San Antonio/Clark), TLU's leading scorer, was held to two points, but he dished out six assists and had five rebounds.

The Bulldogs led 39-30 at the half.

Spencer Levi paced Dallas with 19 points and eight rebounds. The freshman forward made seven of his 12 field goal attempts. Darrius Colvin added 18 points and eight rebounds.
