SEGUIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs gave Head Coach
Carl Gustafson his first collegiate win with dominating performances on offense and defense that produced a 37-0 American Southwest Conference victory Saturday over Belhaven University (Miss.).
At Bulldog Stadium, TLU (1-1, 1-0 ASC) rushed for 311 yards on 45 carries and kept the Blazers (1-1, 0-1 ASC) off the scoreboard by intercepting three passes and by limiting Belhaven to 7-of-20 on third down and to 2-of-7 on fourth down.
Senior running back
Jordan Braden rushed for 126 yards, and quarterback
Kyle Grona and running back
Austin Mathews added 90 and 73 yards, respectively.
Grona scored on a 14-yard run, and Matthews capped the night with a 10-yard TD.
Ian Leslie chipped in 22 yards and had a nine-yard scoring romp.
The Bulldogs intercepted Hunter McEachern three times and limited Hal Mumme's "Air Raid" offense to 310 yards on 69 passing attempts and to 352 total yards on 88 plays.
TLU took a 17-0 lead into halftime after one of the strangest plays in Bulldog football history. Freshman kicker
Tyler Hopkins lined up for a 20-yard field goal. The kick was blocked and bounded in front of Hopkins who swiftly kicked the ball again, on the bounce. The ball sailed high and straight through the uprights.
After initial confusion on the field, and after a few minutes of discussion among the referees, the field goal was declared good.
TLU shut-out an opponent for the first time since Oct. 25, 2008, when the Bulldogs won on the road at McMurry. That McMurry team was not coached by Mumme, who had a previous coaching stop at McMurry. Before Saturday's loss to TLU, Mumme had been 3-0 against the Bulldogs.
TLU won in its first game back in the ASC after four seasons removed from the league. The Bulldogs left the ASC after the 2012 season and went on to win 2013, 2014 and 2015 conference titles in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. TLU made a 2014 NCAA DIII playoff appearance.
The Bulldogs announced their return to the ASC over a year ago and then played in one final season in the SCAC. Saturday night's game was their first conference game back in the ASC.
The Bulldogs and Belhaven, out of Jackson, Miss., met for the first time in their respective histories on Saturday night.
Grona also threw for 207 yards and had scoring connections with
Logan Thompson (56 yards) and
CJ Romero (34 yards). Grona, making his first career start, went 16-for-26 with an interception and the two touchdowns. Romero caught five passes for 89 yards and a score.
Linebacker
Joshua Head led the Bulldog defense with 11 total tackles, including a sack and four tackles for loss.
Kedrick Ward and
Adairius Norwood each produced nine total tackles.
Keyshawn Holman collected a sack for 10 yards and had seven tackles.
TLU interceptions went to Norwood,
James Bell and
Jacob Vasquez.
The Bulldogs hit the road next week for a meeting in Belton, Texas with the NCAA DIII defending national champions - the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders.
Kickoff next Saturday is set for 6 p.m. at UMHB's Crusader Field.
