SAN ANTONIO -- Texas Lutheran Men's Basketball remained a half-game behind Schreiner in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference standings after a 67-63 road win Saturday over Trinity University.
In Trinity's Sams Gymnasium,
Sterling Holmes and
Jordan Kouremetis combined for 39 of the Bulldogs' 67 points. Holmes, the senior point guard, recorded 22 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Kouremetis, the senior shooting guard, added 17 points, three rebounds and two assists. Of Kouremetis' six made field goals, five were of the three-point variety. Holmes also hit five three-pointers.
Zach Behr registered 11 points and five rebounds for the Bulldogs.
TLU, the two-time defending SCAC regular-season and tournament champion, improved to 14-8 overall and to 8-3 in the SCAC.
Trinity fell to 10-11 overall and to 5-5 in the SCAC.
TLU completed the regular-season sweep of the Tigers.
The Bulldogs led by 18 at the half and by as many as 22 late in the first half. TLU never trailed in the game.
Trinity did close to within eight with 1:45 to play, but TLU made eight of 10 free throws in the closing seconds to maintain the advantage.
Trinity scored eight points in the final 21 seconds, including a three-pointer at the buzzer, to pull within four at the end.
Jayden Holden and Brooks Mays each scored 14 for the Tigers.
TLU held Trinity to 25.9 percent shooting in the first half. The Tigers did not make a first-half three-pointer.
The Bulldogs have three SCAC games remaining on the schedule, and all three take place on Jim Shuler Court in Memorial Gymnasium. TLU faces Colorado College on Friday and University of Dallas on Saturday before finishing the regular season on Feb. 17 against Southwestern.
Schreiner, at 8-2 in the SCAC, has four games remaining on its regular-season schedule. Three of those contests take place on the road - at Centenary, at Austin College and at Trinity.
TLU would have a tiebreaker advantage over Schreiner since the Bulldogs swept the two meetings with the Mountaineers this year.
