SEGUIN, Texas -- The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets scored 33 points off of 29 Texas Lutheran turnovers to secure a 66-60 road win Monday night at TLU's Memorial Gymnasium.

The Yellow Jackets (1-1) recorded 16 steals and used the TLU turnovers and a healthy advantage on the offensive glass to take 24 more shots. HPU ended up making seven more field goals despite shooting a lower percentage than TLU (.391 to .444).

HPU out-rebounded TLU 40-34 and dominated the Bulldogs on the offensive glass. The Yellow Jackets collected 18 offensive rebounds. TLU finished the game with seven offensive rebounds.

TLU dropped to 1-2 overall with the non-conference loss.

Chelsey Harris led HPU with 17 points. She added four rebounds and two steals. Valarie Matlock came off the HPU bench to scored 12 points and contribute seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Cami Davis (Marion/Marion/UT Tyler) led TLU with 18 points. She added three steals and two assists.

Presley Stephens (Crandall/Crandall/Allen CC) was the only other Bulldog in double figures. She scored 12 and grabbed nine rebounds.

TLU led 16-15 after the first quarter, but HPU went on a 14-3 run to end the second quarter to take a 37-28 lead at the break. The Bulldogs held a 25-23 lead with 4:41 to play in the second quarter before the Yellow Jackets started their run.

The Bulldogs rallied at the start of the third quarter, using a 13-0 run to take a four-point lead, 41-37 with 5:46 remaining in the third. In the TLU scoring spurt, Davis hit a pair of three-pointers and had a layup.

The lead would change four times in the third quarter.

HPU took a 51-49 lead into the fourth quarter and would not relinquish its advantage. The Yellow Jackets' lead would get no larger than eight in the fourth quarter, but TLU could get no closer than four points in the period.

The Bulldogs hit the road Tuesday for an exhibition road game in Edinburg, Texas against the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. The game tips at 7 p.m. in the UTRGV Fieldhouse. The contest counts as a regular-season game for UTRGV.
