SEGUIN, Texas -- East Texas Baptist opened up a 30-0 lead over No. 21 Texas Lutheran at the half and kept the Bulldogs at bay for most of the second half in a 44-20 road win Saturday at Bulldog Stadium.
The Tigers put up 329 yards of total offense in the first half and scored on three touchdown passes (of 4, 69 and 21 yards) and on a five-yard scoring run in the opening 30 minutes.
Chase Sojka caught a pair of TD passes in the first half, including a 21-yarder with just four seconds remaining in the second quarter. Sojka finished the night with seven passes for 166 yards, with a long TD of 69.
In the first half, TLU threw a pair of interceptions and registered just 88 yards of total offense on 31 plays.
ETBU senior running back Jourdan McNeill rushed for 138 yards on 28 carries and scored three times, with TD runs of 5, 14 and 36.
The Tigers' passing tandem of Dru Smith and Tarek Beaugard combined for 306 yards with 24 completions in 43 attempts. Smith threw for 214 and two scores.
Bulldog preseason All-American
Marquis Barrolle put TLU on the board in the third quarter with a 10-yard scoring run. Barrolle rushed 13 times for 40 yards and had three catches for 23 yards.
TLU was held to 93 net rushing yards on 31 carries.
TLU junior quarterback
Zach Galindo finished the night 23-for-46 with three interceptions and one touchdown - a 3-yard strike to
Caleb Oliver in the fourth quarter.
Jekovan Holmes led the Bulldogs with 10 catches for 96 yards.
J.B. Brown had the Bulldogs' final score, a 4-yard pass from
Kyle Grona with 1:26 to play in the game.
Senior linebacker
Darian Candler paced the Bulldog defense with 15 total tackles. He had 1.5 tackles for loss.
Brandon Stephens had the lone Bulldog sack.
ETBU defenders piled up nine tackles for loss (26 yards in losses). Defensive tackle Khilan Wright had four solo tackles, with two tackles for loss.
ETBU interceptions were pulled in by Zackary Biles, Garrett Gibson and Verry Jackson.
TLU must turn around next Saturday and host Top-10 ranked University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at TLU's Bulldog Stadium. Live video and live stats on tlubulldogs.com, plus a KWED 1580 AM radio broadcast, will be available for the non-conference contest.
