Texas Lutheran eliminated from SCAC Baseball Championship

SEGUIN, Texas -- At Texas Lutheran's Katt-Isbel Field, TLU's 2016 season came to a close Sunday in the 2016 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Championship with a 16-2 loss to the Southwestern Pirates.

The Bulldogs, the SCAC regular-season co-champions and tournament top seed, end the year with an overall record of 26-15.

TLU went 1-2 in the SCAC tournament with an opening-tournament victory Friday over Southwestern, a winners' bracket loss Saturday to Trinity and an elimination game defeat Sunday to Southwestern.

Southwestern advances to the SCAC Championship round Sunday to face Trinity. The Pirates must defeat Trinity twice to claim the SCAC title.

The first championship game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Sunday. The "if necessary" game would be played Monday at a yet-to-be-determined time. All games will be played at TLU's Katt-Isbel Field.

In the elimination game with TLU, Southwestern's Will Cates led off the game with a solo home run to center field, and he homered again in the second inning. His second homer, a two-run shot, just cleared the right field wall and the glove of TLU's Riley Schaefer.

Cates went 3-for-4 with three RBI and four runs scored. Ethan Luna also homered and went 4-for-5 with three runs scored.

Ethan Hallmark collected three hits and scored three times, and Tyler Bludau and Cole Kelly each drove in a pair.

The Pirates recorded 18 hits against five different Bulldog pitchers.

The game ended in the seventh inning due to the 10-run rule.

Jacob Kendra went the distance for Southwestern. The right-hander allowed two earned runs, struck out two and walked three while improving to 2-4.

Cody Rimko took the loss for TLU. The freshman right-hander ended 2016 at 4-5.

Keaton Bohrmann and Eric Rabinowitz delivered RBI for the Bulldogs. Rabinowitz singled to scored Lincoln Baylor in the second, and Bohrmann hit a ground ball to short to score Schaefer in the third.

TLU's loss was the final collegiate game for senior Baylor, Bohrmann, Alejandro Gutierrez, and Justin Law and for junior Trenton Ray (who will graduate early).
