TLU Baseball splits Sat. doubleheader with No. 1 Trinity, wins series 2-1

SAN ANTONIO -- Texas Lutheran split a Saturday road doubleheader with No. 1-ranked Trinity University and secured a 2-1 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series win.

TLU won the first game Saturday 15-5 in eight innings. Trinity took game two 12-4. The Bulldogs posted an 8-4 win over the Tigers in Friday's series opener. All three games were played at Trinity Baseball Field.

The Bulldogs sit alone in first place in the SCAC Baseball standings. The Bulldogs are 21-10 overall and 11-1 in the SCAC.

Trinity is three games behind the Bulldogs in the SCAC regular-season title race. The Tigers are 28-7 overall and 11-4 in the SCAC.

The Bulldogs registered 16 hits in the early game, and every starter had at least one hit. Eric Rabinowitz and Rayce Gatlin each produced three hits, two RBI and three runs scored in the TLU win.

Designated hitter Andrew Whitten hit a two-run double and finished 2-for-5 with three RBI. Justin Law drove in two runs, and Austin Frick scored three times.

Lincoln Baylor tossed 6-2/3 innings for his fourth win of the season. Baylor (4-2) allowed five runs, struck out two and walked three. Aaron Milone pitched the final 1-1/3.

The first game was called in the eighth due to the 10-run rule.

In the late game, TLU picked up where it left off in the early game by scoring a quick three runs against Ryan Gray. But Trinity scored a run in the first and then four in the second (on a grand slam from Andrew Waters) to take the lead.

TLU closed within in a run in fourth, at 5-4, but the Tigers scored seven combined runs in fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings to break the game open.

Cody Rimko (3-3) took the loss for TLU. Gray recorded the win to improve to 6-3.

Chris Tate tossed the final four innings to notch a save. For Tate, the save was his third of the season.

Keaton Bohrmann collected three hits and two RBI in game two. Lincoln Baylor added three hits. Frick drove in two.

TLU returns to action Tuesday with a 7 p.m. home non-conference game against Concordia Texas.
