TLU drops game to Trinity, rebounds for win to reach championship round

SAN ANTONIO -- Texas Lutheran lost its first-ever Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Tournament game, falling 4-3 in 10 innings to Trinity, but rebounded late Saturday with a run-rule win over Centenary (La.).

The victory over Centenary put TLU into the SCAC Championship round and a rematch with Trinity. TLU must defeat Trinity twice on Sunday to claim a third straight SCAC Tournament Championship.

First pitch Sunday at Trinity Softball Field is set for noon.

In the loss to Trinity, Bulldog miscues in the fifth inning led to three unearned runs. Trinity scored a run in the 10th with the international tiebreaker rule in effect. The Tigers started the inning with a runner on second and scored that runner with a ground ball fielder's choice.

TLU had a runner thrown out at home plate on a squeeze-bunt play in the 10th.

In the game with Centenary, TLU scored in every inning but the second and collected 13 total hits.

Jennifer Gallagher, Taylor Yancey, Nicole Snow and Kaymee Gooden each drove in a pair of runs against the Ladies. Gooden's two-RBI single ended the game in the sixth.

Grace Estes went 3-for-4 and scored two runs.

TLU won its school-record 39th game of the year. The Bulldogs, No. 3 in the latest NFCA rankings for NCAA Division III, improved to 39-3.
