Champs Again! TLU wins back-to-back SCAC titles, advances to NCAA tourney

SHREVEPORT, La. -- The Bulldogs will be dancing again in March.

At Centenary College's Gold Dome, Texas Lutheran repeated as Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Champions on Sunday with an 80-77 win over Colorado College.

The Bulldogs, the tournament's top seed, claimed the automatic bid from the SCAC for the upcoming NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship.

TLU will learn its NCAA tournament destination and opponent during the NCAA DIII Men's Basketball Selection Show, set for 12:30 p.m. eastern (11:30 a.m. central) Monday. The Selection Show can be viewed here Monday.

TLU moved to 21-6 overall and defeated Colorado College, the No. 2 seed, for a third time in 2015-16. Colorado College dropped to 16-11 overall.

SCAC Most Valuable Player Sterling Holmes (San Antonio/Antonian) scored 17 to lead the Bulldogs. He was 4-for-9 from the field and 7-for-7 from the free throw line.

Blake Ray (Kerrville/Tivy) and Jordan Kouremetis (San Antonio/O'Connor) each added 13. Ray threw down a dunk with nine minutes to play that put TLU up six. Kouremtis hit a three with 52 seconds remaining to give the Bulldogs an eight-point lead.

Along with MVP Holmes, Kouremetis and junior foward Zach Behr (Temple/Temple) were named to the SCAC All-Tournament Team. Behr scored nine and recorded seven rebounds and three assists in the win.

"Words can't describe the feeling," said Jimmy Smith, TLU's second-year head coach. "We have a great group of guys. To win with these guys is a lot of fun."

Smith now has guided TLU to back-to-back SCAC regular-season titles, to back-to-back SCAC Tournament titles and to back-to-back NCAA Tournament bids. Smith, the two-time SCAC Coach of the Year, was hired in 2014 with the Bulldogs coming off a last-place finish in the conference.

Colorado College shot 53.1 percent for the game but hit only 27.8 percent of its three-point attempts (5-for-18). TLU shot 48.3 from the field and 28.6 percent from three. The Bulldogs made one more three than Colorado College.

TLU turned the ball over just 11 times, out-rebounded the Tigers by three, and took nine more field goal attempts.

John Hatch and James Lonergan scored 23 and 20, respectively, for the Tigers. Lonergan added nine rebounds and two assists. Point guard Justin Berardino dished out 11 assists and scored 10.

One day after scoring an SCAC Tournament record 46 points, the Tigers' Andrew Maddock scored eight before fouling out.
