SHERMAN, Texas -- For the second season in a row, the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs are regular season champions of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. But this year, the Bulldogs have the title all to themselves.
First on Saturday, Texas Lutheran clinched at least a share of its second consecutive SCAC regular-season championship with a 68-64 road win over Austin College.
Then later in the evening, Schreiner upset Colorado College in Kerrville, Texas. The loss gave Colorado College four losses in conference play. Even if TLU falls in its regular season and conference finale next week at Southwestern, the Bulldogs can do no worse than a three-loss conference season.
The Bulldogs improved to 19-5 overall and to 11-2 in the SCAC with the win over the Kangaroos at Austin's Hughey Gymnasium.
Austin fell to 13-10 overall and to 3-10 in the SCAC.
TLU's win also assured the Bulldogs of the top seed at the upcoming SCAC Championship, hosted by Centenary College in Shreveport, La. Feb. 26-28.
Regardless of Colorado College's outcome in Kerrville, TLU clinched the top seed with the win at Austin College since TLU already held a tiebreaker advantage over Colorado College.
The Bulldogs swept the season series with Colorado College.
In the victory Saturday at Austin College, TLU opened a big lead at the half, 36-22, and then held on for the win. Austin cut the TLU lead down to two with 6:32 to play.
The Bulldogs pushed the lead back up to seven before a final Austin College rally had the TLU lead down to a single point with 1:01 remaining.
TLU was able to get to the foul line in the closing seconds.
Paris Marquez made a pair of free throws, and then
Harris Jowell added a final free throw for the four-point lead.
Jowell and
Sterling Holmes led TLU with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Jowell collected nine rebounds, all on the defensive end.
Holmes grabbed seven rebounds. He made seven of his eight free throws.
Marquez and
Matthew Gillette also scored in double figures for TLU. Marquez scored 11. He also hit seven of eight at the line. Gillette scored 10 and had six rebounds.
