SEGUIN, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons threw a touchdown pass with 25 seconds remaining in the game and then added a late safety to upset No. 18-ranked Texas Lutheran 35-27 Saturday night in TLU's Bulldog Stadium.
The Cowboys (2-0) exacted some revenge for TLU's 37-14 win last year in Abilene with a hard-fought road victory over the Bulldogs (1-1). It was the first-ever meeting between the Bulldogs and Cowboys in TLU's second-year home, Bulldog Stadium.
TLU took a 27-26 lead with 5:51 to play on a
Marquis Barrolle (Ingleside/Ingleside) 12-yard run, but the Cowboys marched 65 yards in 11 plays on their next possession to take the lead.
HSU freshman Reese Childress caught a 3rd-and-goal pass from the 11-yard line to give the Cowboys the lead. Childress beat a Bulldog defensive back to far right corner of the endzone and hauled in the pass from Weston Garner.
With 10 seconds to play in the game, TLU tried several laterals to pull out a victory. But the final lateral ended in the TLU endzone for an HSU safety, credited to Trent Walker.
The Bulldogs committed four turnovers (three interceptions) and committed 15 penalties for 147 yards.
HSU receiver Jessie Ramos caught 11 passes for 198 yards before leaving the game late with an apparent injury.
Four different Cowboy receivers caught TD passes (three from Garner and one from Ryan Breton). Garner finished the night 20-for-26 for 294 yards and one interception. He was sacked three times.
Garner's counterpart, TLU senior
Trenton White (Sachse/Sachse), threw for 323 yards and three scores, but he was intercepted three times.
TLU junior
Caleb Oliver (Pearland/Lutheran South) recorded six catches for 121 yards and a score, and freshman
Jekovan Holmes (San Antonio/O'Connor) put the Bulldogs up early with 80-yard connection from White in the first quarter.
Barrolle, NCAA DIII's leading rusher last season, carried the ball 25 times for 126 yards, with a long of 23. TLU rushed 41 total times for 186 yards.
HSU running back Kerry Sloan gained 120 yards on 27 carries and also had a score.
TLU out-gained HSU 509 to 423, but the Bulldogs had nearly 100 more yards in penalties than the Cowboys.
Bulldog junior linebacker
Darian Candler (Humble/Atascocita) led all defensive players with 14 total tackles. He had a sack and 3.5 tackles for loss.
First-year safety
Justus Parker (La Vernia/La Vernia) and junior safety
Matt McCullough (Georgetown/Georgetown) each tallied nine total tackles.
Dominick Stives (Wylie/Wylie East) and
Broderick Sargent (Waxahachie/Waxahachie) each recorded a sack.
Conlan Aguirre, Ryne Lewis and Cory Ward each posted nine tackles for HSU.
