TLU holds off elimination with 4-3 NCAA regional win over Whittier

TYLER, Texas â€" Jennifer Gallagher delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs rallied from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits to defeat Whittier College (Calif.) 4-3 at the NCAA DIII Softball Championship â€" Tyler Regional.
 
Saturday at the University of Texas at Tyler's Suddenlink Field, No. 14 TLU avoided elimination with the come-from-behind victory.
 
The champion of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, TLU improved to 37-5 overall.
 
Whittier's season came to a close with a record of 28-18. Whittier is the champion of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
 
Gallagher's single brought home Ashley Jacobsen (Marion/Marion). Gallagher (Missouri City/Elkins) set the new TLU single-season record for RBI with her 45th of the season.
 
Nicole Snow (Tomball/Klein Oak) tied the game in the fifth with a pinch-hit RBI single that scored pinch-runner Alex Yarbrough (San Antonio/Johnson).
 
TLU fell behind 2-0 after the first inning as Bulldog starter Veny Pizana (Odem/Odem) struggled with her control. Pizana faced four batters, issued two walks, and gave up a hit. She was lifted after one-third of an inning.
 
Bulldog ace Taylor Grissom (Spring/Klein Collins) relieved Pizana and went the rest of the way.
 
Grissom collected her 20th win of the year. Grissom (20-1) struck out three and allowed one run. Already the school record-holder for wins in a season, Grissom became the Bulldogs' first 20-game winner.
 
TLU's victory moved TLU to the 7 p.m. elimination game versus host UT Tyler. The Patriots and Bulldogs started the game but endured a lightning/weather delay in the bottom of the first
