Baseball has season end with pair of SCAC Championship losses

SHREVEPORT, La. â€" Texas Lutheran saw its season end on Friday after a pair of losses in the SCAC Championship. The Bulldogs fell 3-1 to Trinity in the first game, before losing 3-2 to Southwestern in the elimination game.

The Bulldogs end their season with a 25-14 overall record. They earned the two seed in the SCAC Championship.

In the first game, the Bulldogs got out to a 1-0 start in the first inning, and it looked like that one run may be all that was needed, as Aaron Aleman continued to baffle the Trinity hitters.

The Bulldogs got on the board thanks to a Klaus Bohrman RBI single, which scored his brother Keaton.

That 1-0 lead held through the seventh inning, as Aleman (Corpus Christi, Texas) kept Trinity scoreless. He was threatening to shut out the Tigers for the second time this season.

Despite Aleman's heroics, the Tigers finally did break his spell in the eighth inning,  scoring on a bunt and TLU error. Lincoln Baylor, covering first on the bunt, had the throw get by him, allowing the Tigers to plate the tying run. The damage could have been worse in that eighth inning, but a second runner trying to score on that play was thrown out.

The teams went to the ninth tied 1-1, but on the first pitch of the inning, Jeremy Wolf hit a home run over the right field fence to give Trinity a 2-1 lead. The Tigers would score once more before Aleman left the game.

The Bulldogs tried to mount a ninth-inning rally, eventually bringing the winning run up the plate with one out. Alejandro Gutierrez popped up, and Matt King struck out to end the game.

Aleman took the loss, dropping to 7-3, although he pitched well. He turned in eight innings, giving up three runs on eight hits.

Justin Law (Houston, Texas) had a big performance, going 3-for-4. He also recorded TLU's lone extra-base hit, a double.

The Bulldogs started the elimination game in much the same fashion they started the first, taking a lead early in the ballgame.  This time, they grabbed the lead in the second inning, courtesy of a Matt King run-scoring triple. King came around to score later on a Zach Jacobs single.

Those two runs turned out to be the only runs of the game for the Bulldogs, as they were held to one hit the rest of the way.

The Pirates tied things up in the fourth, with the second run coming on a fielder's choice. They would take the lead in the fifth after Will Cates scored an unearned run off a TLU fielding error.

Thomas Harwell (Humble, Texas) took the mound in the second game and tossed six and 1/3 innings. He took the loss, dropping to 6-4 on the year, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits.

Derek Cantu (George West, Texas) finished the game on the mound, pitching the final two and 2/3 innings without allowing a run.

Tony Gennusa (Kingwood, Texas) had two hits in the game, finishing 2-for-3.
