SEGUIN â€" Texas Lutheran scored 25 runs in the second game of Friday's doubleheader split against Centenary, the most it has scored in a single game in 10 years.
Â
The Bulldogs defeated Centenary 25-9 in game two Friday after dropping the first game of the three-game series 7-3.
Â
The split moved the Bulldogs' record to 8-5 overall and 5-1 at home. Centenary moved to 2-6 with the split. Though both teams are SCAC rivals, this series will not count on either squad's conference mark.
Â
TLU racked up more runs than hits in that game two blowout, amassing 21 total hits on the night. Of those 21 knocks, only three were of the extra-base variety. There were 18 singles on the evening.
Tony Gennusa and
Austin Frick each claimed a double, and
Zach Jacobs notched a triple.
Â
The 25 runs were the most the Bulldogs have scored since racking up 26 in a 26-6 win over Howard Payne during the 2005 season. Friday night was all the more impressive considering that production came in a seven-inning affair.
Â
Centenary couldn't do much to stop the Bulldogs' offense once it got rolling, and the Gents' four errors certainly didn't help. Seven of the runs were unearned.
Â
Ten different Bulldogs notched at least one hit in that second game, with Gennusa (Kingwood, Texas) leading the way. The senior went 4-for-5 from the plate, racking up three RBI and three runs scored. His 20 total runs this year leads the SCAC.
Â
Jacobs (Brenham, Texas) was slotted right behind Gennusa in the lineup in the two-hole. The senior shortstop went 2-for-4 with three runs and three RBI.
Â
Alejandro Gutierrez (Pharr, Texas) and
Riley Schaefer (Thorndale, Texas) also racked up three hits apiece. Schaefer, a freshman, scored five runs on the night.
Â
The game started with a bang for the Bulldogs, scoring three runs before Centenary could record an out. TLU finished with five runs in the first inning and never looked back.
Â
The final blow came during a 10-run fifth inning which saw the Bulldogs string together eight hits. Schaefer led off the inning and was one batter away from stepping to the plate three times in the frame.
Â
Freshman
Aaron Milone (Houston, Texas) was the pitcher of record for TLU, earning his first win as a Bulldog. Texas Lutheran used four pitchers in the game, with Milone tossing 1 and 1/3 innings and giving up just one run on one hit.
Â
The opening game of the series was defined by the first inning, as well. Only this time it was Centenary that jumped out to an early lead. The Bulldogs fell behind 5-0 after the top of the first inning.
Â
It was
Aaron Aleman (Corpus Christi, Texas) who got the start on the bump for the Bulldogs. The senior (2-2) entered the game with a miniscule ERA, but suffered his second defeat of the season after giving up those five first-inning runs.
Â
Similarly to the way the Bulldogs' started the second game, Centenary loaded the bases without an out to open things up. Aleman gave up four hits in the inning, but was not helped by three errors from his defense.
Â
After the bumpy first inning though, Aleman locked back into his previous form, holding the Gents hitless for the remainder of his outing. One more run was recorded against Aleman, coming in the seventh inning, but it was unearned.
Â
He finished the night with 6 and 1/3 innings of work, giving up the four first-inning hits, seven runs (four earned), five strikeouts and two walks.
Â
The Bulldogs tried to battle back after falling behind, with Gennusa crossing the plate in the bottom of the first to cut the deficit to 5-1. They would score twice more in the bottom of the fourth, with
Klaus Bohrmann and Frick scoring on a Gents error.
Â
That's all the closer TLU would get though. The Bulldogs finished the game with five hits.
Â
The series finale is set for noon tomorrow (Saturday) at Katt-Isbel Field. Live video and live stats will be available via tlubulldogs.com.
