SEGUIN â€" Two errors in one play allowed the Bulldogs to tie things up in the ninth inning, and a
Klaus Bohrmann sacrifice fly in the same inning secured a wild 8-7 come-from behind win for Texas Lutheran against Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday night.
Â
The Bulldogs trailed 7-5 heading into the final frame, but
Holden Bryant led the inning off with a single and
Tony Gennusa followed that up with a walk. With runners on first and second,
Zach Jacobs laid a bunt down towards third base. The bunt was fielded by UMHB pitcher Ty Johnson, but Johnson's throw to first base sailed over the first baseman's head and into foul territory. UMHB right fielder Will Stafford tossed it back towards home plate, trying to keep Bryant from scoring, but his throw also went awry, allowing Gennusa to score from third.
Â
With the score tied, nobody out and Jacobs at third, the Crusaders issued intentional walks to both
Riley Schaefer and
Justin Law to load the bases, creating a force out at any base. Bohrmann (San Antonio, Texas) came up and lofted a fly ball to centerfield, plenty deep enough to score Jacobs from third and send the Bulldogs to their fourth home win in as many games.
Â
The win moved Texas Lutheran's record to 6-2 on the year, while Mary Hardin-Baylor fell to 0-1.
Â
The Bulldogs used eight pitchers in the game, as did the Crusaders. Freshman
Logan Domino (San Antonio, Texas) earned the win, tossing the final two innings and holding the Crusaders without a run. He gave up just one hit and struck out two.
Â
Texas Lutheran racked up nine hits on the night, including two for extra bases. Jacobs (Brenham, Texas), Law (Houston, Texas),
Hayden Hunt (Sugar Land, Texas) and Bryant (Bullard, Texas) all notched two hits each.
Â
Mary Hardin-Baylor took the lead in the second inning, scoring three runs off of
Thomas Harwell (Humble, Texas). The Crusaders took advantage of a couple TLU fielding miscues in the inning to score the three runs.
Â
The Bulldogs answered back right away, scratching two across in the bottom half of the second inning. Gennusa (Kingwood, Texas) drove in both runs with a two-run double.
Â
Jacobs would tie the ball game in the fourth with an RBI single, scoring Hunt.
Â
UMHB would retake the lead in the fifth with one run in the top half, but the Bulldogs scored twice in their half of the inning to regain the lead. Law ripped a triple off the centerfield wall to score Schaefer. Law came around on a wild pitch.
Â
Mary Hardin-Baylor took advantage of another fielding mistake in the seventh inning when two runs came across after an error by Bryant in left field. The Cru would add one more before the seventh was over to take a 7-5 lead.
Â
Bryant's leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth was the first base runner the Bulldogs had since the fifth inning, as UMHB's bullpen had recorded three straight one-two-three innings.
Â
Texas Lutheran will once again have to leave the friendly confines of Katt-Isbel Field for its next contests. The Bulldogs travel to Abilene, Texas for a three-game series against Hardin-Simmons beginning at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20.
