Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Centenary (La.) nips Texas Lutheran Bulldogs 66-65 Friday in Gold Dome

SHREVPORT, La. â€" Texas Lutheran's Jordan Kouremetis drained a three-pointer that brought the Bulldogs even with Centenary with three seconds to play, but Centenary drew a foul near the basket with .6 of second on the clock and made one free throw to claim a 66-65 win Friday in the Gold Dome.

After the Kouremetis (San Antonio/O'Connor) three, Caden Cheramie found Kendall Demouchet down the length of the floor. Demouchet was fouled and made the first of his two free throws.

Demouchet intentionally missed the second one and left TLU with .3 of a second remaining, following a quick TLU timeout. The Bulldogs' desperation heave down the floor was knocked away by the Gents.

With the loss, TLU drops to 14-9 overall and to 9-3 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Centenary moves a half-game in front of TLU in the SCAC men's basketball standings. The Gents are 14-9 overall and 10-3 in the SCAC with one game remaining in their conference schedule.

The Bulldogs have two SCAC games remaining on their schedule. TLU faces Colorado College at 3 p.m. (MT) on Sunday in Colorado Springs, Colo., and then plays the Southwestern Pirates next Friday in Seguin.

The Bulldogs, Gents and Pirates all remain alive for the top seed in the upcoming SCAC Championship Tournament, to be played Feb. 27-March 1 in Irving, Texas at the University of Dallas.

TLU never led in the game Friday against Centenary, and the game was tied only once. That tie came after the Kouremetis three in the closing seconds. Centenary led by as many as 11 midway through the second half.

The Bulldogs trailed 29-24 at the break. TLU missed eight first-half free throws (9-for-17) and ended the night with 12 misses at the line (22-for-34).

After shooting only 29.2 percent in the first half, the Bulldogs hit 12-of-23 second-half shots and four of their eight second-half three-point attempts.

Sterling Holmes (San Antonio/Antonian/Richland College) paced TLU with 18 points. He added four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Holmes went 7-for-8 at the foul line.

Kouremetis finished the night with 15 points. He made three three-pointers and six total shots.  Donte McGee (Victoria/Memorial/Texas A&M-Kingsville) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and scored seven.

James Sapp and Travion Kirkendoll scored 18 and 16, respectively, for the Gents. Sapp, the conference's leading scorer, was held to 6-for-14 shooting. He grabbed seven rebounds.
