COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Texas Lutheran goalkeeper
Jonathan Michael and the Bulldog defense delivered a shutout Friday, and Michael contributed to a Southwestern own goal as the Bulldogs defeated the Pirates 2-0 Friday afternoon in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Championship quarterfinal.
Michael kept Southwestern off the board for 90 minutes and was a central figure in a Southwestern own goal in the 42nd minute. Originally credited with an offensive goal on the play, Michael sent a direct kick from 52 yards into the Southwestern box that was ruled ultimately as an own goal. The ball appeared to glance off a Southwestern defender in the box and caromed into the upper right corner of the net.
The own goal gave TLU a 2-0 lead into the second half. The Bulldogs withstood 10 second-half shots by the Pirates, but only one shot was on goal in the final 45 minutes.
The Bulldogs, who improved to 10-7-1 overall, advance in the tournament to play No. 3 / No. 4-ranked Trinity. The Bulldogs and Tigers kick-off at 11 a.m. mountain / noon central at Colorado College.
Southwestern fell to 6-14 overall and lost to TLU for a second straight match.
Isaac Lopez put TLU in front to stay with a goal in the 19th minute off an assist from
Alejandro Martinez. Lopez's shot was from 20 yards beat the keeper to the right post.
TLU registered seven total shots and put four shots on goal.
