SEGUIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs improved to 4-1 overall with an 82-71 home victory over LeTourneau Friday at the TLU Thanksgiving Classic.
TLU opened up a 24-point lead in the second half, but LeTourneau cut the advantage down to seven with 1:15 to play in the game.
Blake Ray (Kerrville/Tivy) and
Jordan Kouremetis (San Antonio/O'Connor) hit free throws in the closing seconds to halt the YellowJackets' rally.
Sterling Holmes (San Antonio/Antonian) again led the way for TLU. The junior point guard followed up his near triple-double on Wednesday with another solid double-double. Holmes scored a game-high 23 and added 12 rebounds and three assists.
Holmes went 7-for-13 from the field, 8-for-11 from the line, and grabbed 11 of his 12 rebounds on the defensive glass.
TLU shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half to open a 47-32 halftime edge. LeTourneau shot just 33.3 percent in the first half and finished the game at 39.1 percent.
The Bulldogs dropped off to 37 percent in the second half as LeTourneau surged to 45.5 percent.
Throughout the game, the YellowJackets struggled from the three-point line, making just four of 22 shots from beyond the arc. TLU wasn't much better - hitting just 4-of-18.
Kouremetis and
Zach Behr (Temple/Temple) delivered 11 and 10 points, respectively, and
Harris Jowell added eight points and eight rebounds for the Bulldogs.
LeTourneau, now 1-3 on the year, received 16 points off the bench from Caleb Loggins.
TLU and LeTourneau each close out the TLU Thanksgiving Classic on Saturday. The YellowJackets face Schreiner at 2 p.m., and TLU hosts East Texas Baptist at 6 p.m.
