ABILENE, Texas -- For the first time in its NCAA Division III era, Texas Lutheran Women's Basketball won on the road against former conference foe Hardin-Simmons. TLU (1-0) secured a 72-69 victory over the Cowgirls (1-1) Saturday night in HSU's Mabee Complex.
TLU's first meeting with Hardin-Simmons as an NCAA Division III provisional member occurred in 2000 with both teams playing in the American Southwest Conference. The Bulldogs were 0-and-13 in the DIII era against the Cowgirls before Saturday's win. TLU now plays in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Adelaide Wenzel, a sophomore transfer from Texas A&M-Kingsville, and junior
Kristen Lye (San Antonio/Clark) each scored 20 for the Bulldogs. Wenzel (Victoria/Victoria East) hit 3-of-4 three-point attempts and grabbed nine rebounds. She also registered three steals.
Lye pulled down 13 rebounds and made 12-of-16 free throws. She was 4-for-11 from the field. She added three blocks.
TLU junior point guard
Bailey Champion (San Antonio/Reagan) contributed 12 ponts and three assists.
Taylor Dydalewicz (Dripping Springs/Lake Travis) and
Savannah Hight (San Antonio/Brandeis) scored eight and seven, respectively.
TLU trailed 34-29 at the half but out-scored the Cowgirls 20-18 in the third quarter and 23-17 in the fourth.
Saturday's game was the TLU's first regular season game with the new four-quarter system.
Sara Vargas scored 24 points and had 11 rebounds off the bench for HSU.
Addison Garcia contributed 15 rebounds and eight points for the Cowgirls.
TLU returns to action at 7 p.m. Wednesday with an exhibition road game in Edinburg, Texas against University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley.
