SAN ANTONIO -- Texas Lutheran improved to 7-0 all-time in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with a hard-fought 21-14 road victory Saturday against Trinity University.
On the soggy playing turf of Trinity Football Stadium, the Bulldogs jumped to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter before stopping the Tigers' comeback with a key fourth-down stop in the fourth quarter.
Matt McCullough,
Brandon Stephens and several other Bulldog defenders joined together to stop Travis Williams on 4th-and-3 from the TLU 15. McCullough and Stephens were credited for the combined tackle on the five-yard loss that gave TLU possession of the football with three minutes to play.
The Bulldogs converted one first down - on a
Trenton White to
A.J. Saucedo 16-yard completion - and ran out the rest of the clock for the conference win.
The fourth-down stop by the Bulldogs ended a 7-play Trinity drive that started at the Trinity 8 and went 72 yards.
The Bulldogs were fortunate to lead 14-0 at the half after TLU freshman safety
Justus Parker forced a fumble at the TLU 2 that teammate
Jordan Sims recovered in the endzone for a touchback. On the play, Trinity receiver Cody Sandman caught a Austin Grauer pass and rumbled 61 yards down to the TLU 2, where Parker made the strip and kept the Tigers off the scoreboard.
TLU improved to 6-2 overall and to 1-0 in the SCAC. Trinity dropped to 6-2 overall and to 0-1 in the SCAC.
TLU is 3-0 all-time against Trinity in SCAC play. The Bulldogs have won the last two SCAC Championships and opened each of those title chases with wins over Trinity.
TLU's White, a senior, connected with
Caleb Oliver for a pair of touchdowns. Oliver, a junior, caught a 29-yard TD in the first quarter and secured a 14-yard scoring grab in the third quarter.
White also found
Jekovan Holmes, the freshman from San Antonio, for a five-yard score in the first quarter. Holmes tied Cameron Peavy's single-season receiving TD record at 13 with the score.
The White-to-Holmes TD was setup by a
Jake Bahr interception and 24-yard return that put the Bulldogs in business at the Trinity 23. Four plays later, the Bulldogs were in the endzone.
White completed 20-of-33 passes for 190 yards and three scores.
Senior running back
A.J. Saucedo, another San Antonio native, carried the load for TLU in the Bulldogs' rushing and receiving attack. He rushed 27 times of 74 yards and caught seven passes for 70 yards.
Trinity cut the TLU lead to 14-7 with a 34-yard pass from Grauer to Sandman in the third quarter.
Sandman found the endzone again in the fourth quarter on a 22-yard pass from Justin Ventura.
Bulldog junior linebacker
Darian Candler registered eight total tackles for TLU and had a half-tackle for loss.
Defensive end
Jonathan Olonade picked up a sack and had eight total tackles. Fellow defensive end
Brandon Stephens had seven total tackles with a tackle for loss.
Bulldog cornerback
Jordan Sims recovered a fumble and picked off a pass.
TLU returns to Bulldog Stadium for next Saturday's 1 p.m. home contest against Austin College.
