SHERMAN, Texas â€" For the second straight game, and third time since starting conference play, Texas Lutheran found itself needing a three-point bucket to tie the game as the horn sounded.
Â
And for the third time, that shot went just barely awry, as
Kristen Lye's buzzer-beating three-pointer rimmed out, sealing a 70-67 loss to Austin College for the Bulldogs on Saturday.
Â
The loss was TLU's second straight, dropping its record to 8-8 on the year and 3-3 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. The 'Roos improved to 8-8 and 3-3 in the SCAC with the win.
Â
The Bulldogs led by seven with 7:20 to play, but the 'Roos outscored them by 10 the rest of the way. Austin College was helped by Erin Riley, who scored 10 of her 21 points in that final 7:20.
Â
The Bulldogs received a heroic effort from
Taylor Dydalewicz in the loss. The junior from Dripping Springs, Texas poured in 26 points on 10-of-19 shooting. She was also 3-of-6 from behind the arc, and a perfect 3-of-3 from the charity stripe. She pulled down six rebounds.
Â
The difference came in the second half, where the Bulldogs shot 35 percent from the field, while the 'Roos managed to knock down 50 percent of their shots. After making 9-of-10 from the free throw line in the first half, TLU shot 6-of-11 in the second half.
Â
While Dydalewicz was the only player to reach double-figure scoring for the Bulldogs,
Karisa Cantu (San Antonio, Texas) provided a strong performance, scoring nine points, dishing out eight assists, pulling down seven rebounds and notching four steals.
Â
The Bulldogs shared the ball well, notching 18 assists. It was just the second time this season they lost a game when recording more than 12 helpers.
Â
Dydalewicz scored the first eight points of the game for TLU, and 12 of the first 18, helping the Bulldogs get out to a lead as large as six in the opening 20 minutes. It looked like the Bulldogs would head to the locker room with a halftime lead, as they held a 31-25 advantage with 1:05 left in the period.
Â
Austin College knocked down a pair of 3-pointers though, and took advantage of a late turnover to grab a 33-31 lead at the half.
Â
The Bulldogs led for more than half the contest, with Austin College holding an advantage for just over eight minutes total.
Â
