Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Casas' career night helps Women's Hoops to win over Tigers

SEGUIN â€" Texas Lutheran is over .500 for the first time this season, notching its second straight win after beating Colorado College 85-65 on Saturday night.

The Bulldogs outscored the Tigers 52-36 in the second half to take control of the game. They shot better than 61 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes, and made 4-of-8 from behind the arc.

The win was Texas Lutheran's fifth in the last seven games, and moves its record to 7-6 overall and 2-1 in the SCAC. Colorado College dropped to 2-13 (2-2 SCAC) with the loss.

Bianca Casas (Edinburg, Texas) enjoyed a career day for the Bulldogs, scoring a career-best 16 points on 6-of-14 shooting. She was aggressive from the outset, with those 14 shots by far a career high. She also notched a season-best five assists.

Casas got things going in the first half, where she poured in nine points on 3-of-7 shooting. She also tallied three of her five assists in the opening frame.

The Bulldogs finished the game with 46 percent shooting from the field and knocked down 40 percent of their three-point attempts. It was the second straight game the Bulldogs have shot that well from the field. They shot 47 percent in last night's win over Centenary.

Casas wasn't the only player to enjoy a strong offensive night. Karisa Cantu (San Antonio, Texas) finished with 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting. She stuffed the box score like usual, notching six assists and four rebounds, to go along with two steals.

Kristen Lye (San Antonio, Texas) finished one rebound shy of a double-double, notching 12 points and nine boards. Savannah Hight (San Antonio, Texas) was the other double-digit scorer for TLU, pouring in 11 on 4-of-9 shooting.

While the strong second half pushed the final margin to 20, the game was a competitive one throughout the entire first half. In fact, the Bulldogs found themselves trailing 25-18 with 5:56 left in the first half. A 15-4 run for the Bulldogs ended the half and gave them a four-point lead heading into the locker room.

Despite the late run, Texas Lutheran still struggled a bit on offense in the first half, shooting 30 percent from the field, while Colorado College shot almost 45 percent.

The Tigers scored the first four points of the second half to tie things back up, but that would turn out to be the last time TLU didn't hold the advantage the remainder of the game.

TLU did its biggest damage with a 14-1 run, capped off by a Bailey Champion (San Antonio, Texas) fast-break layup, that put it up 58-40. The Bulldogs forced three turnovers during that stretch. They forced 25 Colorado College turnovers for the game.

With the momentum from the strong two-game home stand, the Bulldogs will head back out on the road next weekend for a couple of tough tests against Schreiner and Trinity. TLU will tip off against Schreiner at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16, and face off against Trinity at 4 p.m. the next day.
