LONGVIEW, Texas â€"
Alejandro Martinez scored in the 100th minute of action to give the Texas Lutheran men's soccer squad a 1-0 overtime victory on the road against LeTourneau on Saturday.
Â
Despite throwing 16 shots on target before Martinez's goal, the Bulldogs had battled to a scoreless deadlock for almost 100 minutes. The sophomore came up with the game-winning goal off a pass from
Alex Cortes, scoring from the left side of the box. It was Martinez's second goal of the young season.
Â
The win improved the Bulldogs' record to 2-1-1 on the year. The Yellow Jackets dropped to 1-2-1 after the loss.
Â
As mentioned, the game wasn't scoreless for a lack of trying from the Bulldogs. TLU put wave after wave of pressure on the LeTourneau goal, but Yellow Jacket keeper Miguel Cabrera made 16 saves before Martinez put one past him.
Â
The game was completely controlled by Texas Lutheran. It outshot LeTourneau 36-7 and put 18 shots on goal compared to one for LeTourneau.
Â
Martinez was the team leader in shots, throwing six towards the goal with four being on target.
Colin Nunley (Keller, Texas) was right behind Martinez with five shots. Three other Bulldogs finished with four shots.
Â
Junior goalkeeper
Jonathan Michael (Coppell, Texas) notched his second clean sheet of the season. It was a relatively stress-free evening for Michael, as he was forced to make just one save.
Â
Next up for the Bulldogs is their first conference test of the season. They will go on the road to play Schreiner in their SCAC opener at 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12.
