SEGUIN, Texas â€" The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs broke in Bulldog Stadium Saturday night with a 61-15 season-opening victory over Sul Ross State that included a 44-0 domination of the Lobos in the second half.
Â
The Bulldogs (1-0) celebrated each score Saturday with fireworks, and the fireworks crew was put to use often at the first-ever regular-season game at Bulldog Stadium.
Â
With TLU alumnus Verne Lundquist and a host of university dignitaries and alumni on hand, the Bulldogs shrugged off a slow first half that had TLU clinging to a 17-15 lead at the break.
Â
At one point in the second half, TLU scored on five straight possessions and scored six total touchdowns and a field goal on 10 second-half possessions.
Â
Sul Ross (0-1) turned the ball over five times in the second half (once on downs, three on fumbles, and once by interception).
Â
TLU out-scored Sul Ross 24-0 in the third quarter and 20-0 in the fourth.
Â
TLU junior Trenton White threw for 277 yards and three touchdowns, and four different Bulldogs caught TD passes.
Â
Lewis Williams II led all TLU receivers with six catches for 86 yards and a touchdown.
Â
Marquis Barrolle rushed 17 times for 91 yards and one score.
Â
Bulldog safety Drake Dowling recorded 12 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and intercepted a pass. He returned the pass 23 yards into Sul Ross territory to set up a three-play, 29-yard scoring drive.
Â
Darian Candler, a sophomore linebacker, added 10 tackles, including 3.0 tackles for loss.
Â
The Bulldogs collected 15 total tackles for loss, for 42 yards in losses.
Â
The defense recovered three fumbles and sacked Sul Ross quarterbacks six times. Six different Bulldogs had sacks.
Â
TLU hits the road Saturday for a rematch with Hardin-Simmons University. The Bulldogs suffered a road loss last season against the Cowboys, and that loss kept the Bulldogs out of the NCAA playoffs.
Â
Kickoff from Shelton Stadium on the HSU campus is set for 1 p.m. in Abilene, Texas.
Â
TLU will have a live video webcast on tlubulldogs.com with audio provided by KWED 1580 AM. An audio-only webcast will be available on seguintoday.com.
