Men's Soccer loses a heartbreaker in double overtime at Southwestern

GEORGETOWN, Texas â€" The Texas Lutheran men's soccer team battled into overtime, but Southwestern's Andres Carreno-Mende scored less than two minutes into the second overtime to hand the Bulldogs a heartbreaking 2-1 loss on Friday night.

It was the second straight overtime loss for the Bulldogs as they fell to 3-3-2 overall and 1-2-1 in SCAC play. All three losses have come in overtime for the Bulldogs. The Pirates improved to 3-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play.

Carreno-Mende has been a thorn in the Bulldogs' side the last two seasons. He scored the game winner in last year's 2-1 loss in Georgetown, as well.

After a first half in which shots were difficult to find, Tim Schaffer and the Bulldogs capitalized on their first chance of the second half to take the 1-0 lead. Colin Nunley (Keller, Texas) provided the service on a long cross into the box for Schaffer (New Braunfels, Texas) in the 55th minute. Schaffer took one touch and knocked in his second goal of the year.

After the goal, the Bulldogs kept the pressure on the Pirates, racking up three more shots in the next seven minutes, including two on goal. They were inches away from pushing their advantage to two goals when Nathan Drouillard's header rattled the crossbar in the 62nd minute.

Just minutes later though, Southwestern found an equalizer from Austin Robinson in the 67th minute. Robinson's shot ricocheted off the crossbar and then off TLU keeper Jonathan Michael for the goal.

In the 75th minute, Southwestern nearly took the lead after Jacob Buckley's shot hit the post. After that near-goal, neither team was able to generate many chances, with Texas Lutheran getting off two shots that both sailed wide, including an Andrew Welsch attempt as time expired.

The first half provided an even share of play for both teams, with shots proving hard to come by. The Bulldogs managed three shots, while the Pirates tallied four.

Both teams racked up 10 total shots on the night and four shots on goal. Michael (Coppell, Texas) made two saves in the game.

Texas Lutheran will look to bounce back from the tough loss on Sunday when they take on No. 4-ranked Trinity on the road at noon. Live stats are available via tlubulldogs.com.
