PINEVILLE, La. â€" Texas Lutheran survived a potential game-winning drive from Louisiana College and again received a record day from diminutive running back
Marquis Barrolle (Ingleside/Ingleside) in the Bulldogs' 38-32 road win Saturday at Wildcat Field.
Â
The Bulldogs are 3-0 to start a season for the second straight year. LC dropped to 1-2 overall with the non-conference loss.
Â
Trailing by six with 3:28 to play in the game, LC drove down to the TLU 4 with less than 10 seconds to play.
Â
Out of timeouts and hurrying to the line for a fourth-down snap, LC Head Coach Dennis Dunn was flagged for sideline interference. Dunn marched an estimated 10 yards onto the field to bark instructions to his team on the final play of regulation.
Â
The LC penalty resulted in a 10-second run-off of the game clock and set off an on-field celebration by the Bulldogs.
Â
"I had no idea was the call was," said
Michael Wall, TLU's sophomore weak safety. "I was freaking out. I was just going to play my coverage. The coach just comes running onto the field, clearly on the field. I'm like, 'That's illegal or something.' I don't know. We all were kind of freaking out. I'm just glad it turned out the way it did."
Â
"I just started running around in circles, hitting everybody. It's just an awesome feeling. Just all of a sudden, (the officials) said it was over."
Â
Wall (El Campo/El Campo) had a key fourth-down stop on an LC possession, recovered two LC fumbles, registered five tackles and broke up a pass.
Â
Barrolle, fresh off a school-record 46 carries with 218 rushing yards in the win last week against Hardin-Simmons, picked up where left off against the Cowboys. The 5-foot-4, 150-pound sophomore rushed 30 times for 179 yards and a school-record tying four touchdowns.
Â
In three games this season, Barrolle has rushed for 488 yards and seven touchdowns on 97 carries. He added eight catches for 64 yards against the Wildcats.
Â
"Marquis is unbelievable," said
Danny Padron, TLU's fifth-year head coach. "He is just unbelievable. God really gave him lots of talent, and it's just exciting."
Â
TLU rushed for 290 yards on 57 total carries and out-gained LC by 207 on the ground. The Bulldogs held the ball for 37:27, compared to LC's 22:33.
Â
Barrolle's backfield teammate
A.J. Saucedo (San Antonio/Central Catholic) rushed 19 times for 82 yards.
Â
TLU recorded 559 yards of total offense and did not turn the ball over. LC gained 460 yards (377 through the air) and turned the ball over three times.
Â
"We got a different ball club," said Padron, referring to the 2012 TLU loss at Wildcat Field that saw LC force overtime with a last-second touchdown and then post a 44-37 win. "Our defense just played lights out, and offense did a great job again."
Â
"It was a complete team victory again. Special teams held in there. That's just a big play team they have. It's very difficult to contain and hold them, and our guys did a good job."
Â
TLU snapped a three-game losing streak at Wildcat Field, posting the first-ever Bulldog win at the LC stadium that opened in 2008. TLU evened its all-time road record at 4-4 against LC.
Â
TLU junior quarterback
Trenton White (Sachse/Sachse) completed 24 of his 36 passes and threw for 269 yards. White also rushed four times for 29 yards, with a long run of 24.
Â
White hooked up with
Dustin Hannon (Tyler/Whitehouse) for a 29-yard TD pass with just 14 seconds remaining in the first half.
Â
Hannon led all receivers with 96 yards on four catches. TLU freshman
J.B. Brown (Refugio/Refugio) added a career-best eight catches for 74 yards.
Â
LC quarterback Easton Melancon was 25-for-46 for 377 yards and three touchdowns.
Â
The Wildcats were always dangerous on kickoff returns Saturday. Five LC returns went for 138 yards, with a long of 68.
Â
The Bulldogs and Wildcats each entered Saturday's game receiving votes in the latest D3football.com Top 25 poll.
Â
