SEGUIN â€" For the second time this season, the Texas Lutheran men's soccer team battled to a scoreless draw after playing 110 minutes without a goal against Centenary on Friday afternoon.
Â
Friday's action at Gustafson Field was controlled mostly by the Bulldogs, but as can sometimes happen in soccer, a team can play well without finding a deserved goal. TLU finished with 25 shots compared to just six for Centenary. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, despite getting seven shots on target, none found the back of the net.
Â
The draw moved Texas Lutheran's record to 3-1-2 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play. Centenary moved to 3-1-1 on the year and 0-1-1 in SCAC play.
Â
Junior goalkeeper
Jonathan Michael (Coppell, Texas) tallied his fourth shutout of the season on Friday. He made two saves on the afternoon, including a diving one late in the first half off a Centenary free kick to keep the game scoreless. The shutout improved Michael's goals-against average to a miniscule 0.47.
Â
As obvious from the number of shots taken, the Bulldogs had several quality chances to get on the scoreboard. Freshman
David Ching (Keller, Texas) led the way with six shots, while
Isaac Lopez (Round Rock, Texas) followed up with four.
Â
Lopez, a junior, had one of the game's best opportunities. The midfielder found himself with the ball in front of net with less than 10 minutes to play in regulation. He got a shot off, but Centenary keeper Rylan Whan made a tough save to keep the score tied.
Â
The Bulldogs opened the game with 12 shots in the first 45 minutes, controlling much of the action though forcing Whan into making just two saves. The second half saw the Bulldogs improve their shot accuracy after putting four of their 10 shots on target.
Â
The game was also filled with plenty of whistles, as 12 yellow cards were handed out between the two teams, as well as two red card ejections. Centenary coach Emmett Rutkowski was ejected after receiving two yellow cards in the 96
th minute. TLU's Ching received his second yellow and subsequent red card in the 94
th minute.
Â
The Bulldogs will continue SCAC play at home on Sunday afternoon when they play host to Colorado College. The Tigers currently sit tied atop the conference with a 2-0 SCAC mark, and are ranked No. 22 in the latest NSCAA Coaches' Poll. Live video and live stats will be available via tlubulldogs.com.
