Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer falls in high-scoring double-overtime affair

SEGUIN â€" Twice the Texas Lutheran men's soccer team came back from one-goal deficits to tie the game, but eventually the Bulldogs fell 3-2 in double overtime on Monday against Concordia Texas.

The loss dropped Texas Lutheran to 1-1 on the year. Concordia improved to 1-1 with the win.

The action was fast and furious at Gustafson Field, with both teams creating plenty of scoring chances. The Bulldogs had some chances after equalizing in the 79th minute. Concordia was forced to play a man down after Marshal Tucker was ejected in the 80th minute on a red card.

Despite a few quality chances for TLU, it was Concordia that eventually found a game winner in the second overtime period. Matthew Butler scored his second goal of the day, finding the back of the net in the 106th minute. The goal came from a ball from Adrian Sanchez that opened Butler up for a one-on-one opportunity with TLU keeper Jonathan Michael. Butler beat Michael to the left post.

The Bulldogs displayed plenty of heart in coming back from a pair of deficits. After Butler scored in the eighth minute to open things up, the Bulldogs and freshman David Ching (Keller, Texas) answered with a score in the 20th minute. The goal came from a nice pass from Nathan Drouillard.

Concordia regained the lead five minutes later, with Tucker scoring in the 25th minute off a free kick.

The score remained at 2-1 the rest of the half and deep into the second half before the Bulldogs evened things up in the 79th minute. The equalizing goal came off a corner kick. Colin Nunley (Keller, Texas) lofted a pass across the penalty area where it found the waiting head of Drouillard (San Antonio, Texas). The 6-6 Drouillard managed to rise above the mass of players to head the ball towards the near post and into the net.

There was a moment in the first overtime where it looked like the Bulldogs were going to come away with a game winner. Alejandro Martinez (Round Rock, Texas) received the ball in the middle of the box with enough space to try and make something happen. Unfortunately, his shot was saved by the Concordia keeper.

Texas Lutheran actually outshot the Tornados 22-12. After getting outshot 7-6 in the first half, TLU came out in the second period and created 10 shots compared to just two for Concordia.

Michael (Coppell, Texas) made four saves on the day, including an acrobat one in overtime to keep the Bulldogs alive. The save came on a breakaway attempt for Butler.

Texas Lutheran will hit the road for the first time this year for its next three contests. First up, the Bulldogs will take on East Texas Baptist in Tyler, Texas at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5.
